Poor Radio Reception
Hi,
need some help i have an x reg 406 estate and have had for about 6 months now. The radio reception has always not been very good. Does it need the aerial replacing? Or the coax too?

Re: Poor Radio Reception
FM? Is your aerial near the windscreen or tailgate?

Hi,
The aerial is at the front near the windscreen.

Re: Poor Radio Reception
If memory serves (from previous posts on here) there is an circuitry built into the body of the aerial and this gets corroded. You should be fine just replacing the aerial. The AM antenna is built into the radio itself.

Re: Poor Radio Reception
Chances are the aerial connection's corroded. Here's briefly how to get at it (the guide may need modification if you've got a sunroof):
Use a flathead screwdriver to lever out the courtesy light - it's held in by a clip on the opposite side to the switch.
Unplug it.
Use a torx screwdriver to remove the 2 screws holding the panel in.
Remove the panel, I think it comes out windscreen side first. Unplug the light and temperature sensor.
You should see the aerial mount.
Use pliers or something to take the metal cover off, then unbolt the aerial. Alternatively you can unscrew it from on the roof, but it may well scratch the paintwork
Give it all a good clean with a wire brush and some electrical contact cleaner if you've got some

Re: Poor Radio Reception
I was under the impression the amplified aerials only came along when they got moved to the rear on estates. I could be wrong though....teamster1975 wrote:If memory serves (from previous posts on here) there is an circuitry built into the body of the aerial and this gets corroded.

Re: Poor Radio Reception
This is something I need to do myself. My radio reception is absolutely cr*p. When I had a Hyundai i10 while my '6 was being serviced (surprisingly nice car), the radio reception was miles better than in my Pug.
The HU is an Alpine, which has a power wire from the back for amplified aerials. This is something that I've been looking to do - but... can anyone recommend a nice amplified aerial? And will it be better than the standard one?

Re: Poor Radio Reception
Another point for corrosion to hit is between the whip and the base. Unfortunately it can cause the whip (which should just unscrew) to snap its screw thread in the base.
