Engine preheater

It looks very simple compared to the complicated kits, would it be any good?

Just go to the scrap yard and liberate one off a Renault,
the lagunas have Metal ones standard,

I wouldn't fancy belting down the autobahn with that gubbins wobbling around, presumably secured only by the hose clips holding the hoses on.

Even at '380 gramm', (presumably empty), it's bound to work loose at some point. (Always assuming the flow restriction it provides doesn't cook your engine first).

What way do the 12v ones work, do you set a time in the car for it to come on before starting it up, and does it run off the main 12v battery. Could one be wired up to one of them small lawnmower batteries instead.
The only thing that put the idea of a preheater in my head was a video on winterising a car, and this was a suggestion.

I reckon it depends on how the pump works. They usually fit into the heater hose and I'm sure Kenlowe etc. wouldn't sell too many preheaters if they damaged engines.

thay do put heaters in the coolant on the hdi's as my 306 has one so i presume that thay fitted the to all the hdi's

This is part 8 on the diagram, helpfully called "resistance". However, it's for providing warm air to the passenger compartment.



I also notice that the water feed to the heater matrix is taken from the EGR water jacket. The EGR is (intended to be ) open when the car is cold, so this provides another mechanism to help heat up the poor shivering passengers.

Early HDis had some heater resistors in the coolant circuit, later ones use the water jacket around the EGR link pipe as mentioned. I notice mine starts to clear the windscreen alomst straight away so I thought this was down to the water jacket. In any case whatever it does use is feeble.

How well did it work?

I can't say I remember it making a whole lot of difference, perhaps a little quicker turning over nut the warm up times didn't seem to change noticeably.

On both my HDI's the trick is to open the face vents on a chilly morning to be greeted by hot air almost straight away.
