Car Insurance rant - yes another one lol

Post by plod »

So I can insure the moningo for less then £300, whereas the pug was £600+

I rang my insurance when I go the Mondeo, and they wanted nearer £700 for the mondeo but when asked they said i'd be covered for the 406 as well.

I've had to transfer my private plate over, so thought i'd let the insurance run until this came through and look at kicking my insurers into touch
So done the plate change, and did an online quote, and although not the cheapest, I managed to get quoted £345 with Hastings Premium, which is protected no claims, guaranteed courtesy car, legal protection, free breakdown cover blah blah blah, all singing and dancing policy, and get this, the excess is......................£0, yes £0 excess!!!

SO rings them up, and asks how would I stand for covering the 406 whilst I sell it.
They've just done me a quote, and when they asked how many miles per annum, I said non, I wont be driving it as i'll be declaring it sorn on friday whilst selling it
They said, you got to have a mileage, so I said what's the lowest, he said 50miles, so I said put that in, and he comes back, and says £780, I say for both, No he says, just for the 406 !
WTF a 50mile per annum policy and they want £780!!!
I said, I won;t be needing the policy as i'll stick with my current insurer until I sell the 406 and come back to you

Cue Highlander

I see I have developed a reputation for lengthy anti-insurance rants ...

... this could be because the insurance companies are cheating lying robbing motherfuckers with no sense of humanity or morality whatsoever.

Surely the higher the mileage, the more likely it is that you'll have an accident and therefore the higher the risk you are as a driver in that car? Useless god-damned wankers!

That looks very much like a "we can't get our heads round your requirements, please either f*ck off somewhere else or pay us a ridiculous amount of money" quote to me :frown:

I've just (yesterday) renewed mine for another year......

£291.00 fully comp, protected etc etc.........BUT......when I declared the modifications like a good chap they slapped on a compulsory excess of £500.00

I accepted this and went with Sainsbury's because I've got her indoor's insured with them and get a bit of discount (and double Nectar points, which add up surprisingly fast we found).

I tried three 'specialist' insurers and Direct Line and they had excessive interest charges and excesses ranging from £350.00 to £500.00 again. I read up as much as I could on reviews and car forums and there's quite a lot of complaining against these small specialist insurers (like getting a bit nasty with you over the 'detail' and threatening to cancel you policy if you don't perform a wire-rope act whilst signing the acceptance form, whilst on the phone trying to get your pesky PROOF OF NCB).

So I chickened out and went for one of the 'big boys' thinking I'd be treated better. I guess all that happens when you declare mods is that you pay for the stuff again (through your excess) if it gets damaged  so "yes we will cover you but YOU will pay up if anything goes wrong" :|

I can't, the price of parts that you might need to replace after an accident is similar, although there are a lot more Mickey Mouse parts for the Ford, you can get a few for the 406 (bonnet, front wings, bumpers and I think grille) but nothing like as many, so perhaps the insurers are intending to replace Ford parts with patterns? Perhaps it's because Pugs have traditionally depreciated faster than Fords, so there's more chance of having to pay out for complete cars. Or maybe Pug drivers are more likely to have accidents? I could be completely cynical though - I wonder how much Ford are bunging Lloyds etc. to keep the premiums low so more people will buy their cars...

Over here it seems to be largely based on the original purchase price and the power output, with scant regard given to stuff like the price of spares and depreciation. And we pay an absolute fortune for the most basic insurance possible :(

Commonly, if the car is over 3 years old the insurers repair agent will use 'Green Parts' to repair your motor. These will be salvaged panels from other written-off motors, so they'll take a Red, Blue, White whatever door/wing and spray it to match your car. The prices of these bits must be fairly similar across the whole range. Makes you wonder why cars get written off so readily too - ready made parts bin??

I think we'll all end up with in-car cameras with GPS eventually to benefit from fair insurance rates.

And of course, if they know where you are on GPS they no how fast you're going too.........

Been giving a little consideration recently to getting one of those dash or screen mounted video cameras, it all started when watching in car footage of incidents on youtube. I just think that, should you be involved in an incident of any kind, it can't hurt to have a record of what's happened. Let's face it there are so many knob-heads on the road that we all witness several examples of shyte driving on a daily basis, even if we're not directly involved. It could also be a laugh! Basic cameras are cheap enough on ebay.... :?

Indeed they are cheap on the bay. And it's amazing how many ''claims'' dissapear when you mention that you have video footage of the ''accident''.
I wonder if anyone offers discount yet for cars so equiped?

I haven't looked into it yet mate, but several of them seem to start automatically when you start the car and as long as it'll record a couple of hours worth of video that'll do for 99% of journeys. Let's face it, if anything does happen you'll download it when you get where you're going anyway.
