Replacement speaker question

Post by DiscoPol »

now having read all the recent posts by the youngsters on ice this and ice that, i decided today was a good sunny day to do some messing about with the pug 8)

all the recent posts must have got to me because i went out and bought a new head unit, i believe thats what the kids call em these days its just a new stereo to me  ,

and some speakers to replace the front door ones, now the head unit was a doddle after working out that peugeot in their wisdom had the constant feed and the switched feed arse way round to the way my new H.U wanted em so a bit of jiggery pokery and thats sorted now, remembers all the settings and stuff its a MP3 thing with a usb and card reader, plus ipod connection so no more bloody polish radio for me :cheesy:

then the speakers,

well went for the only ones that were direct swaps for the fixings and looked a decent enough brand and price (too long in yorkshire  )

Sony explod or something, whipped off the old ones and saw the pug plug, thought better of just cutting it off so had a rummage in my tool box and found some spade connectors that fit nicely into the pug plug, but........... which is which?

no 1 or no 2 to the big spade on the speakers :? :?

the one with the black line on the cable runs to the wide spade on the speaker but which do i plug this into mauve or grey side of the pug plug?,
tried em both ways round and think ive got it right but im sure one of you audiophiles will either set me straight or reassure me, had a listen both ways round but only had radio to go off as a source as it was done on the mother inlaws driveway and my ipod and such was back at home at the time so with the changing music and polish talking in between there wasn't much to go off as a reference point.

it sounds loads better with the usb key input compared to the crappy fm transmitter i was using for the ipod before but again I am aware its all mp3 so missing the pure sound of a cd, but my cd player has never worked in the 406 so im loosing nowt there,

would just like to know which way round i should have it  .

any help much appreciated :D

What happens when you get the wires the wrong way around is that the bass notes from speakers with opposing polarities will cancel out as one speaker will be pushing while the other is pulling. How to check would be to put the sound level all the way to one side and test the wires both way round while listening and seeing which way was bassiest. This is of course assuming that you haven't done the rear speakers aswell. If you've done all four speakers, just make sure that the wires are the same way around on all speakers.

Ive matched the wiring on the front two, so that they are the same each side,

havent done the rears yet but i think that will be next, just picked up some extra teaching hours this week (thanks Karol) so another trip to Fue Verte (Polski car audio gaff) might jut be in order as the fronts sound loads better but the rears are just letting it down when i turn it up a bit.

so even if they arent the right way round as per the originals will they still sound ok?

in my feeble head i thought it wouldnt sound quite right as the push becomes the pull, if you get me? and the new speakers had all sorts of gubbins wired in on one side but not t'other, i will have a look at the originals tomorrow and see if i can fathom which wire went which way, wish i had thought of that whilst i was sticking the new ones in

cheers for the reply HBC, they sound much better even if they arent the right way round :)

there is a danger i might just get into this ICE game if im not careful

In my experience having all the speakers the same polarity, whether negative or positive, will not sound any different, or at least I haven't been able to tell. The original speakers may well have + and - signs embossed/pressed into the speaker where the wires from the connector join the speaker. As long as the new rear speakers have the same polarity as the fronts all will be well. Just wait till you start to get the bug for amps and subs. I love my bass and always have a sub box in my cars. Got a single 12" in the 406 and 2 x 15" with a 1500W amp in the 309!

Wont a sub just accelerate the shaking to bits that is happening to me right now :?

the 406 isnt the sturdiest of motors :P

already looking at that dynamat stuff to stick behind the front door speakers as they seem to be finding every last loose thing on the car :(
