Noise from o/s rear 406 hdi 110. Estate.

Post by BykerMz »

My wife has a 406 lx Estate 110. It's developed a very irritating noise from the rear o/s. Mainly at about 30mph and again at about 45/50mph. I first thought wheel bearing, jacked the car up spun the wheel no play, no noise and no rough spots, I also have checked the near side, Any idea's anyone. Cars done 103k and is in great condition, we have another 1.8 petrol estate in the family and by comparison the noise on the HDI is really bad.

Difficult to describe, it's no worse cornering and it's not a knocking or grinding, more of a wowwowwow noise in time with wheel revolution, but it does not increase or decrease as you go faster or slower, it's also difficult to pin point as to where it comes from but the consenus of opinion of 3 differant passengers is that it comes from the o/s rear wheel. Somebody suggested tyre noise, but the tyre has been on longer than the noise! Did have the hubs off to clean and adjust hand brakes though, but I can't see how that would create the noise.

The tyre still could have failed, swap front to back to see. I think you covered all my other ideas already.

I'm with Steve on the tyre. Backplate catching is a strong possibility also.

Hi,

I believe i have experienced this 3 different times and on two of the occassions the sound was exacerbated because the cars were estates and noise from the rear could travel/ be heard more because of the more open space.

The cars were My mums old Rover 420, My Dads Primera estate and my old (now my brothers!) Vectra Estate. Every time it turned out to be the way the tyres were wearing and in my case from a faulty side wall on one of the tyres.

That wowowowowowow sounds exactly the same.

Thanks guys for your suggestions, I've got some free time on Wednesday so it's off with the back wheels first and then check the handbrake pad material!

Hi Guy's. You were right! It was the tyres! Changed both side rears and the noise has gone! Now all I have to do is to fix the drivers window switch as the window only goes up and down when it feels like it!
