Hi there
ive got a 406 2.0 hdi D9 (03 plate) and my backbox and exhaust tip is massively rusty, so i want to get a new, shiny, sportier one.
however, ive never fitted a new exhaust to a car before so I dont understand how easy it is to remove the existing backbox and replace it with another one. is this easily done or do i have to replace the full pipe that leads to it or what?
i have no idea what size the box currently is.
the one i want to buy is:

the inlet is 63.5mm, but how do i find out if this is compatible with what ive already got, as all i want to do is switch the backbox?
thanks

Fitting new exhaust backbox

406 2.0 HDi Rapier, 2003 plate
Re: Fitting new exhaust backbox
Taking the old one off is simple, recently replaced mine. Just undo the two nuts/bolts,( just behind the backbox) where the clamp is, that joins the back section with the middle.
As for the new universal one, im not sure, im never used them before, ive always bought ones that are designed to fit the specific car, that way its a straight fit.

You should take the opportunity to replace the rubber hangers and clamps. Motor factors sell a paste for helping the seal.
Re: Fitting new exhaust backbox
If the universal exhaust has a straight pipe fitting onto the existing pipe, you will need to cut off the end flange and buy a jointing piece that will close up to fit both the existing pipe and the new pipe....such as this......http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Exhaust-Pipe-Conn ... a1ff8363ad

@jasper5, will i still need this if i find a backbox where the inlet is the same width as the original's was?

That is the best type of fitting for joining up 2 exhaust fittings, these type fittings allow you to fit 2 pieces that are different sizes or the same size, but you can get a cheaper version for same size pipes that is slotted at both ends and fastens with ordinary clamps.

ahh right, so it basically relies on the size of the pipe i already have?

Don't know for sure, but I think a back box from one of the petrol models will fit, probably much cheaper....
