what head unit?

Post by Dan224 »

need to change my head unit, so what do you think I should do? it currently has a clarion tape deck with multi disc in the boot, and is wired up to the JBL amp( :( )

option 1, get another pug head unit and have the dealer re-code it? (easy way)

option 2, buy an after market unit and have a play trying to get it to play ok through the amp (hard way)

I've not pulled the head unit out yet, so is the amp fed by the speaker wires or by RCA connectors? because I dont understand why its so complicated. Does it use a non amplified signal through the normal speaker wires?

Cheers

Yup. The fun part is there's more than one way they wired the amps up

Sooooo........
Theoretically, I could splice some RCA plugs onto the speaker wires running to the amp? Hmm

Guess what I'm going to be doing on my day off tomorrow. lol

yeah, thats what i did, i bought a female iso to bare ends and some male RCA connectors and made a lead...if your gonna be getting a new HU then you need one with 2 pre outs

also get a RCA ground loop isloator that can take 4 channels, you will need this to remedy the popping on changing source, cd track, radio station etc.. that will most likely result from fitting a new head unit (the popping comes from mis matched reference voltage at head unit and amp, its very common, you'd be lucky to escape it... in simple terms, ground loop isoloators fix this problem and can be bought cheaply on ebay

theres a very useful guide and supporting thread posted on coupe club that will take you through upgrading the headunit stage by stage, but i dont know if the mods on this site like posting info from other sites

Can I ask how you managed to fit aftermarket speakers in there? I had to make up a whole new shelf from scratch to fit new speakers

to tell you the truth i didnt do it, a car audio specialist is a friend of my girlfriends mechanic brother (thats confusing) and he did it on the cheap, fitted the whole lot, apart from the front door speakers. i think he pulled the old ones out from the top and slotted the new ones in, then just screwed them in

The back speakers are not really interchangeable due to a special bracket used on the factory speakers. Adapters aren't available either! Hence my question...

Hmm, very strange then! He didnt complain about it or say it would be difficult, so im not sure if he did it from the boot rather than lifting them up? Could try and find out I guess...
