What code reader?
Anyone know what type of code reader I would need for a 2.2 sri 2000 w reg? Done a bit of googling but cant find info as to what type of type it is.
If possible anyone recomend one at a decent price?

Re: What code reader?
Your choices are extremely limited - basically you need to spend a few hundred on a Lexia PC interface and some illegal software. Probably better to just pay a dealer for a diag session.

Re: What code reader?
That sounds good. Anything cheaper? Only need a simple one really. I am gonna see under the bonnet if there is a sign that it is obd 2 before I buy.
Re: What code reader?
Mine isent a obd 2. It protocol is called a kwp2000, I think.
This one is cheaper, but it dosent support can-bus:

Re: What code reader?
I have seen the even cheaper too. The main thing I need to know is if it is obd 2 or not as I cant find any info on it. There are no stickers or plates on the car saying so either.
Your english is just fine too

Re: What code reader?
why do you need to know that. Mine is not. but I can communicat whit it any way. If yours is from 2000, it dosent support obd2. The socket looks like a Obd2, but as fare as i know it is not.
Re: What code reader?
You 100% sure of that? The reader the garage used looked like a simple hand held one too and he did not charge me anything to read and clear it. Thing is I know that obd 2 was not on all cars here until 2001 but there are still some that have it prior to 2001 from what I have read?mjb wrote:Your choices are extremely limited - basically you need to spend a few hundred on a Lexia PC interface and some illegal software. I suppose I could buy one on ebay and just see as my wifes car is a 2003 and no doubt I will change to a newer one sooner or later and it will come in handy again some day.
Re: What code reader?
I am not 100% sure. The thing i know, is that I can read mine whit the u581. And I get live data from the car. eg TPS sensor, coolant temp, maf sensor......It read the car as a kwp2000 protocol. I would buy the u581, becaus it supports canbus. It may be handy in the future. You can also buy a u585, that supports Vagcom(vw,seat, skoda, audi) Good luck

Re: What code reader?
Your ECU is completely different. Different functions, different make, different protocol.carsten0 wrote:The thing i know, is that I can read mine whit the u581
also, "with" is spelt w-i-t-h
Shame the guy's car doesn'tI would buy the u581, becaus it supports canbus.

Re: What code reader?
mjb, what protocol does my car take exactly? Since it is fairly rare and the same engine is in a 407 (not sure if same ecu) I am finding it hard to get info. As I said the garages reader looked basic also but what do I know.
I know it says cars from 2001 are obd 2 but some prior are also, just I can't seem to find info. If there are deffo no readers for mine I will save myself money and hassle buying one thats all.

Re: What code reader?
I'm afraid I can't answer that. To find out, I'd suggest booking it in at a dealers for a diag reading, and ask the guy very nicely if he'll tell you once he's got it hooked up to his interface. I doubt the answer will help you find a reader though - pre-2001 petrols appear to speak a protocol similar to KWP2000 which seems to be incompatible with every cheap reader anyone's triedwaj1234 wrote:mjb, what protocol does my car take exactly?
I doubt it's the same ECU, and if it is it'll most likely be running a very different firmware. If I recall correctly, the 2.0 petrol turbo shares its ECU with some Vauxhall, Alfa Romeos, Seats and BMWs. You couldn't swap them around though!Since it is fairly rare and the same engine is in a 407 (not sure if same ecu) I am finding it hard to get info.
I know how you feel about the lack of information though; finding out anything about the 2.0 petrol turbo was nigh on impossible until enough of us here had them and had done enough work on 'em! Unfortunately speaking to pre-2001 petrol ECUs is just as unknown to us all. At the moment.

There are some incredibly expensive readers which look basic, but will speak to your toaster!

Re: What code reader?
I am gonna book it in for the air con servicing soon (bit late for this summer I know) and will get him to read it again and clear it for me as he dont charge me since its a friend of the family so I will ask about its protocol and see if it is the lambda sensor again giving the fault which if it is may explain the lumpy tick over.

Have you had a look for interface kits that you make yourself and hook up to the pc ie from maplins or something my dad made his own somehow.
