So I took it to Kwik-Fit for an alignment. The camber was around -2 degrees (ie. not the positive camber I was expecting!) which is apparently right, but it was toeing out a lot. Lots of fiddling with what looks like a bush(?) half way between the centre and the wheel, and everything was green on the screen. The camber on the front was WAY out and it was slightly toe-out and he fixed it with the aid of a welder used as a blowtorch(!!)
Borrowed some crayon, marked the tyres and drove a little too far on them. Nevertheless that it all rubbed off was a good sign, as was the heat across the tyre, the heavier steering (mmmmm) and reduced noise. £40. Win!
Now I can hear what I think is the offside disc catching the backplate. Haha remove one noise and another one becomes apparent!

While it was up on Kwik-Fit's ramp however I noticed a lot of bubbling paint on the drivers door. It also reflected the lights in a different distortion pattern to the body. It also had a rusty patch at the edge where it's evidently been thrown into stuff. It also has a wonky wing mirror fitting and the bottom of the door sticks out a bit. This, coupled with the fact I've just had to tighten the door bolt back up, and the lack of auto-folding mirrors leads me to believe the car's had a new drivers door which wasn't in the service history
