Our 1998 V6 saloon and 1999 V6 Coupe (both I believe are D8) have trip computers, range, average mpg, instant mpg, average speed etc. Is that what you meant by trip computer?

Could I fit one to my 406 LX D9? Is it easy/cheap/worthwhile to do?
D8s only I'm afraid :)
bra1nDeaD wrote:I've seen D7, D8 & D9 all over the place, what does it stand for? From a certain year?
D8 is 1996-1999 with a radiator grille like the one in my sig
D9 is 1999- with a mesh radiator grille
If I want to retro-fit it, where do I start? Do I have to go to the stealer? Or can I order it online and fit it myself? I think it probably also needs some software changes which only the stealer can do, or am I wrong?
There's a (fairly long) thread in here somewhere which covers the job. Basically it involves a lot of wiring, a bit of drilling and the bottle to attach stuff to your ECU :) But like I say above, it's a D8-only procedure

From what I can tell, the D8 V6 Coupe actually had the all wiring in place for the trip computer, and in a lot of cases just needed a new wiper stalk and a switch turning
The saloon was likely a retro-fit job. Is there a single wire on its own coming out of the ECU box? Where/when was it made?

Unless you've had them from new, in which case I'm evidently talking out of my arse
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

I'll have a search on that thread, see what I have to do to retro-fit it :cheesy:

Puzzling. The Coupe was owned by a friend since new, and he would not know how to open the bonnet let alone retrofit stalks. He had it serviced by Pug every 10k, so it is possible it had some sort of firmware upgrade in that time.

The saloon we have had for 3 years, PO was my Mum's elderly neighbour who again would not have retrofitted anything. First owner was a doctor, had it for 18 months so again I doubt that he bothered either.

I wonder if you could specify it as an option from new, that would make much more sense to me.

Alright, I got a newer version of my sat nav working. My original was from 2001 and I got a backup from 2003. After I popped it in I had to wait for a progress bar and it said that it was updating my software. After the update I could see that hidden menu as well :cheesy:

So that menu is probably in 2003 and later only (or maybe 2002).

I still dont know if I have a trip computer or not, so I will continue that conversation here

I have listened with my new stethoscope to the engine, and the chaving noise seems to come from a cambelt pulley. I will undo the covers soon to investigate further.
