What engine does it have?

I'm guessing 1.9TD - Fuel starvation/needs bled?

Bah! Just because I'm obviously blind.... :P

I think 1000rpm's way under the limp-home rev limit on diesels (2500rpm isn't it?) so it's probably starved of diesel or air. What would the effect be of mixing petrol and diesel (other than a knackered pump)? Maybe low revs as soon as the petrol makes its way up the fuel pipe followed by an inability to start? Guess you could stick your nose in the filler to see?

Airin the line and/or fuel starvation I could believe. That or a shagged accelerator pedal/cable. Maybe even a knackered pump and/or injectors?

I don't know for certain but based on what I know about petrol, diesel, and their respective engines, petrol in a diesel engine would be extremely dangerous due to the higher compression ratios.

Also, I don't believe the 1.9 would do limp-home mode due to the relative lack of electronic control.

As usual, if I'm blowing this out of my arse please ignore/correct me.

Petrol mixed in with diesel, in a diesel, would give lack of revs, but would also give clouds of white smoke out of the exhaust and a noisy engine.

I would check the air filter for blockage and the turbo pipes for splits.

I would be taking off the fuel filter lid and looking inside for fuel, if full, then check if it smells of petrol.

I would then bleed the system and check for fuel at the injectors (undo the pipes and look for diesel coming out on cranking). If no start, try easy-start.

Is the immobiliser coming off?

Is the fuel cut-off solanoid on the injection pump clicking when the ignition is turned on and off? If not maybe the needle is stuck closed.

Failing all that and as the car's history is unknown? I would be taking off the cambelt covers and checking the timing.Maybe someone did the timing belt and didn't set the timing right?

It's a long shot but it could have been run on veg oil, in the recent cold weather the veg may have waxed and blocked the fuel filter giveing fuel starvation and then not starting, if this is the case then change the filter, bleed the system and it should be fine.
