I guess you could put it where ever you want, although I can't see how it would clear an antipollution fault. As well as a cat, according to your characteristics, your car also has evaporative emission control, I guess I'd be looking at those...

Sounds like good advice if I knew what it was and where to find it 
if the fuel filter isn't the cause is there any point even putting it in?

I've no idea but I don't suppose it could do any harm. Probably best to put it somewhere where you can support it with cable ties etc.
Where what was, cat or carbon canister? (time to buy a Haynes?)

ah, so is that what 'evaporative emission control' means.... a carbon canister, well that makes a bit more sense to me 
as for rigging the fuel filter in, can any of you chaps point out the fuel line in the engine bay for me...... i thought it might be the one i put an arrow next too - but could be possibly and horribly wrong

Looks like the fuel line, if that bar that it's attached to is the fuel rail (is it attached to the injectors?)
One problem with retro-fitting (and this is a biggie) is you don't have the connectors to do the job, and those pipes are pressurised (to what extent I don't know)! I really wouldn't recommend creating a situation where you have a puddle of petrol develop in the engine bay and petrol pissing (or even worse, spraying) all over a roasting hot engine block!
The chance of hitting that magic 4-8% fuel:air mixture in an engine bay has got to be high when sitting at traffic lights
If you're insistent on doing the job, I'd put it where it's supposed to go and acquire the relevant hoses from a dealer

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
