I've finally got some oil, only blank place I could find it was the blank dealers :x The only other multigrade gear oil I could get hold of was 75W90, I got some just in case (and may even bung it in if the 75W80 doesn't improve matters, followed by sawdust :cheesy: ). A job for tomorrow afternoon methinks.

Do the simple thing first, try adjusting the clutch pedal as it pushes little bit more when you press the pedal. I'm assuming that you're pressing the clutch to the floor board to change the gears and you have a cable clutch. If it's hydraulic clutch try to check the system as it pushes the rod enough distance to allow smooth gear change.

No I don't have the cable clutch, it's all rods,if only it was as easy as adjusting the cable,i'd be a happy man. Not sure if you can adjust the pedal on mine!?? :|

I've moved my seat forward to make sure I'm giving it the full travel.

Gearbox oil changed, it looked like almost 2 litres came out but, rather worryingly, it was jet black. As for the magnet on the drain plug:

:!:  :(

Looks like I either had a communication breakdown or the guy put the wrong oil in it. There's no huge breather on the top of the '8's box but the reverse plunger is there, it's 20mm and leaves a nice big hole to stick the oil in (stuff spending ages getting the car level :cheesy: ).

It's improved but not perfect. I also greased the selector balljoints (only the ones on the gearbox, Haynes says I need to drop the eggsauce to get to the others, big rasberry to that) which might have something to do with it too. It's still occasionally argumentative but I think I can live with it, providing it doesn't get any worse.

The cable's self-adjusting I'm afraid Loz. If it goes into reverse when the car's stationary it generally means the clutch is releasing fully.

Pah! that's nothing, you should have seen the "christmas tree" that came out of my mates MG Metro Turbo in 1989

Gearbox in the engine sump anyone?

You'd normally epect to see red or light brown coloured gear oil I suppose but if it makes you feel better the gearbox oil in my 45,000 mile Mazda MX6 came out a black as your hat; which surprised us.

At least you've changed it now

My gearbox doesn't feel all that nice and I wonder if Peugeot cheapened the whole thing rather than the traditional bomb-proof boxes of old 405's etc.

Nothing wrong with a gearbox in the sump, it served the Minis well for more than 40 years, Just doubly-important to service it properly.

The syncronizers are different for a start: I was wondering what the difference between my 2.1's ML5T and the HDI's ML5TC, the old one uses traditional balls and springs (17 in total) while the later 'box just uses a shaped spring, one for each gear.

That's after comparing them in Service Pox. The 'boxes look very similar but I ask them in Pug here and they said no way. Every single part seems to have a different item code too.
