406 2.2 hdi not firing
hi having problems with car, when I accelerate car shuts down restarts with management light on but not storing any codes.
last couple of days didnt always start first time yesterday took loads of times to start it turns and is trying to start but not firing. Have checked pump its ok it is starting intermittedly. d9 model in process of checking sensors and cleaning not sure what to try next

Re: 406 2.2 hdi not firing
My first guess would be the in tank low pressure fuel pump. Is this the one you checked? How did you decide it was ok?

Hi not sure the guy at the garage said he checked the pump and said it was fine he cleaned connectors, earths not sure what else. it started he cleared engine management light and left it home to me he couldnt get to the bottom of it. Went out to start car and same as before trying to start but not firing. Then I waited for all lights to go out hearing lots of noises from behind glove box and car started took it a run put foot down and car never conked out. did notice that revs took a bit to come down, came home and waited till all lights went out and it started. Dont have any specialists here to take car to nearest is glasgow but Im a bit worried about taking car anywhere at moment live in the country and frightened to accelerate to overtake anything have lost confidence in car till I can get to the bottom of this.
Cheers in advance

Did the garage read the fault code when they cleared the light? or did they just disconnect the battery for a little while?
The fault code would be a good place to start if the engine management light comes on i'd expect there to be fault code logged. This will hopefully give you roughly some kind of idea where to start looking.
It is possible for the low pressure pump to work intermittently, but if it was that i'd expect a low fuel pressure fault code logged in the ecu.

Re: 406 2.2 hdi not firing
Hi put car to Peugeot garage and this is what they have said cost £70
Check engine for engine light on, check vehicle for cutting out and starting fault. Set up car on pps, fault traced to diesel high pressure monitoring system which relates to low fuel pressure. jump start car and carry out parameter tests, found fuel pressure etc to be ok. advise customer fault relates to starter motor not spinning engine at correct speed, causing fuel pressure to drop, causing starting and cutting out, new higher class of starter motor required to cure fault.
Got a recond starter in April and at the time I noticed it was smaller than the one that came out so mabey the case. Garage cost £209 for part alone, will have a look about to see if I can get part any cheaper
Thanks again

Re: 406 2.2 hdi not firing
But how would a starter motor cause the car to cut out when it's already running

Re: 406 2.2 hdi not firing
I just thought that the starter motor started the car, I left car in garage with light on Monday 8.20 am it took them till yesterday at 3pm to check ..car light would have been off. I dont know enough about cars etc when I got car home yesterday it wouldnt start but tonight it started 1st time, dont really want to go out in it incase it cuts out and doesnt restart,
I wonder what they would have came up with if the car didnt have problems starting which only happened on thursday.

It sounds a bit like horse droppings to me, what if you're battery's a bit flat?
If it's less than a year old shouldn't they change it for the right one? Perhaps with a small cash adjustment. Failing that I bet there's plenty of other Pugs & Citroens in the breakers with the right one.

Re: 406 2.2 hdi not firing
Still cant get to the bottom of this the battery is fine and so is the starter motor.
Now when you start the car is fires up and 2 seconds later it cuts out the crankshaft and cam senors are ok. There is obviously a fuel cut off at soon as it fires but am stumped where to go from here or could it be an immobiliser issue I am reluctant to go any where near the dealer but with 138 miles to nearest garage and a car that is now not starting I dont know where to go from here
Any advice most welcome
Cheers guys

Christ mate, you really are up sh!t creek. No-one mobile? I'm not really sure what to suggest (apart from a mystery fire...), it could be fuel I suppose, the engine runs, uses up the pressure in the system and dies, which would seem to point at one of the pumps. The only result the mechanics had was something to do with the fuel pressure too (although they went off at a tangent and pointed a finger at the ash tray or something). Seeing as how there's two pumps on the car, which one did they check?

No there is no mobile unit, even the nearest AA unit is 60 miles away and they dont carry a diagnostic reader, would just tow you to the Pug garage The local garages -dont have any faith in them
I am just glad I didnt let them fit a new starter motor
Not sure about the pumps the guy I use said they were ok, I have read about a double relay which I will get him to check tomorrow, think this has totally baffled him. Its totally doing my head in
even the taxi driver gave me a free lift home and there is no bus route LOL so I really need to get it going, must say Im getting a dab hand a getting towed.

Re: 406 2.2 hdi not firing
sorry you haven't got it fixed!!!
This still reminds me of a skoda where the the intank pump had failed, had just enough pressure to get it started then would cut out. Basically it would pressure the system before the engine started, but as soon as the engine was running it couldn't keep the pressure up enough to supply the high pressure pump..... so the engine would cut out.
No idea how you could test this apart from just replacing the low pressure/tank pump.

Re: 406 2.2 hdi not firing
Only one other garage in area with diagnostics took car there this morning and told them I needed live data they said fine and fuel pressures
they phoned and said they have found an intermittent fault with the pre post heating relay
and a fault with the additive stuff in the tank
They had the car going and left it to heat them then it wouldnt start again
Dont know whats going on

What a bloody nuisance
I feel for you fella. Those faults they said above won't stop the car from starting and running (unless it's below 0 degrees) that pre/post heating fault comes up alot on the HDi and I think is almost disregarded by all accounts.
Have a nose around on this here web site .......http://www.ilexa.co.uk/forum/index.php? ... board=22.0
You'll have to plod through a fair bit but I've found some usefull tips on there.
