not many 406's have ever been on a drag strip and still it kept going

Well thanks for all your replies guys. (apart from Geordies! My 406 has done far more miles than any other car I know so I forgive a little bit of wear and tear on the ignition barrel! Any pugs I have owned before, especially deisel, have been the most reliable, best drive and agreeable cars I've ever have had, I did even own a BMW once but that was more trouble than it was worth! I've tried the rest and will only settle for the best!) I did WD40 the barrel when I stripped the console, which probably helped the key eventually come out. They key isn't getting stuck now but there is a certain drag to it when pulling the key out so I think it is time to replace the barrel. I don't have the original handbook, and only have the one key, was that a stealership price quote you had Puggy? Would they be able to make a barrel to match the key or would I need a new key?

hi saffy , it was a quote from the main stealers, think thats the only place
you can get them, i tried a used one but didn't work, have managed to get
mine to work for now but shall need a new one.the price is around £125 but they
charge £20 extra if you dont have the number and it will work with your original key
and really not difficult to do

406's are not that reliable that is a fact, espec the newer D9. Credit to mine tho as it kept plodding on.
French Manufactuers Peugeot, Citroen and Renault didn't come bottom of all surveys for many years now for nothing.
That said I would buy another 406/7 in maybe a few yrs time.

To be honest, Geordie is right - these "surveys" are the very reason I bought the Honda and not the 407. I know my D8 was ultra-reliable but D9's and later "electronic" French cars just don't fill me with confidence.

But saying they come bottom is too much of a sweeping statement, they don't, that usually applies to companies like Fiat, Alpha Romeo and (thanks to the Flealander mk1) Land Rover. PSV and Renault generally come around the middle (along with Vauxhall). You're right about Honda though, the top places generally are reserved for the Japanese, hence my Ni$$an, which turned out to be the most awful car I ever owned. It never went wrong though.
Incidently, in last year's JD Power survey Škoda came joint second along with Honda, who'd have thought it?

D9s have more or less the same level of issues as the D8. And just like the D8, some D9s have problems, most do not. Every car marque produces the odd car which has issues. Even the Honda Accord has issues!
Saying that the 406 and Peugeot in general come bottom of the list is a very sweeping (and incorrect) statement, fed by frustration I suspect.

I don't think the D9 is any more trouble than the D8 at all.
Things that go wrong with D8's:
Rad fans (corrected on the D9)
Ventilation fan (corrected on the D9)
Rear calipers (corrected on the D9)
Elec window probs (corrected on the D9)
Speedo probs (corrected on the D9)
Immobiliser probs (corrected on the D9)
The only thing more complicated about the D9 is the BSi and this very very rarely gives any trouble at all. The HDi Diesel unit is more advanced but no more trouble than the XUD's.
As for these car surveys they are a load of bollox. They should be based upon mileage and not based on asking some old man how reliable his Skoda Fabioza is on his 2600 miles per annum trips to Tesco's
A company Vectra owner would see the whole life of the car pass by in 3 years/100000 miles and thousands of hours of driving so is bound to have a few more comments to make than Mr Fabia

High failure rate here thanks to a silly design flaw (spade connector not rated for sufficient current). Thankfully it's cheap and easy to diagnose and replace. I'm pretty sure there's been one or 2 D9 blowers go, or iirc the attached circuitry responsible for variable speed

Does the D9 even have a keypad to go wrong?
...and the multiplexed wiring throughout the car which makes diagnosing electrical problems difficult. The single biggest reason why I won't buy a D9 (I prefer using a multimeter to troubleshoot as opposed to dragging an oscilloscope and power out to the car), with the second being the BSI which sorry to say has quite a high failure rate according to posts on here - almost as common as D8 blower fan failures but eeeeeeeever so slightly more pricey to fixThe only thing more complicated about the D9 is the BSi and this very very rarely gives any trouble at all.
