hi guys, i have a d8 saloon hdi 110 and am wanting to replace the speakers but dont know what size to get.
anyone know what size the standard one's are??
i have the philips unit with cd changer.

Why do you want to change the speakers?

well quite simply the standard ones are total crap.
all the speakers are going to be run on amps (i have put a post on here putting them up for sale but no one wants them)
so i need to change them for some that will handle the power of my amps.

Jamjar is right, the standard speakers aren't all that bad and are pretty sensitive giving good volume. However, the standard head unit is pretty poor to be honest; changing this for something decent (a true 40watt RMSx4 unit) transforms the whole sound stage to a much higher level. I have always found the high Kenwood or Alpine range to work best, giving pace and fluidity to the sound. Changing the speakers won't really make such a huge difference to the sound quality. If you want more bass then just fit a good boom box with a decent amp attached. You really need to throw money at the situation to get good sound. There are so many cheap head units and amps out there it can confuse the situation, they will all make a noise of some description but fitting decent units will make a nice controlled sound stage which isn't a strain to listen to over a long period of time and that's what you pay the extra cash for. You haven't said if you have a saloon or estate either.

I was wondering that, the ones in the rear pillars on my estate are 10cm (I think) and suck like an electrolux.

The estate will always be a compromise due to extra hollow road noise when compared to a three box car. If you really want to change speakers just bear in mind sensitivity is key. You really need to be aiming for 92db or more otherwise it will sound too quiet - every increase of 3db doubles the output volume, the standard speakers appear to be within this range and should be able to handle around 50watts of a low s/n input without too much problem - signal distortion kills more speakers than a sheer power input overload. A boom box will give the volume you need (subs need much more power to drive them than 6inch speakers, hence a separate amp will be required) But if you don't change your head unit you are just wasting your time and money, the difference will be truly marginal if you only change speakers, change your head unit for something good first of all and be surprised how good it then sounds

Hi guys,

I'm going to agree with muffundell - i binned the standard head unit and fitted a 45w x 4 sony unit - the difference is unbelievable. The bass response fron the standard speakers is very good - although i am considering fitting a 10" sub and amp just to provide that extra depth to the sound. The tweeters on top of the dash help provide the staging effect that muffindell talked about. Makes Daniel O'Donell almost bearable/

Give it a try anyway - you will be impressed and you've nothing to lose!
