Well, I killed her!

Post by nick »

Looks like she's pretty much beat up..

The last couple of days my babys been making some strange noises when starting her up and turning the wheel.. sort of metal on metal grinding if you like.

I got herup to the garage and had a look, and couldnt see anything wrong. One of the guys said it might be the power steering pump - fine, mesays, but it'll cost a fair whack to get a new one.

Out driving today and everythings peachy! Go up to the wifes, then decide were hungry. I head to the car, start her up, strange noise as usual, nad i start driving. Then lights come on. Seriously. It was like bloody blackpool in the car. Battery light flickering, hardly any heater power, airbag light comming and going as though it was an american in a hostel... Everything.

Park up at the wifes again, switch her off, and try to start her back up.. Try being the operative word. She didnt even turn over! Got the torch out, checked the belts, and everythings fine. It did look as though there was a fine metal powder on the left hand side, at the altenator, covering the left hand side of the engine, but couldnt tell real well(its dark)..

I had to phone my sis for a run home - and the cars sitting up there just now..

:(
Thanks,
Nick

I had similar lights on when my Alternator went tits up (thats prob why it wont start - flat battery), the fine metal filings might be off the bottom pulley?

When my Alternator went, I think I had every warning light come on then off, then on again etc.

at first i thought it was a tensioner away - but one of the garage guys diagnosed a power steering pump.

with a bit of luck its just a tensioner and the altenator...

failing that.. i really dont know - especially with xmas here! :(
Thanks,
Nick

Anyone got a spare camshaft pulley?

This has been causing the power steering problems, altenator problems - et all!

Nick

did you actually look at those pictures before posting? I particularly like your 'blizzard at the north pole' one ;)
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Hmm, it's a bit hard to hear past that diesel powered vacuum cleaner you've got going... :P

It sounds like a bearing going south, which I reckon isn't far off. It's a bit hard to tell what it is in the pics, which is probably more to do with my ignorance of these cars than anything else. Seems like you caught it in time though, rather than turning your radio up 'til the whole lot went bang

OOOps

I assume that has the same effect on the engine as the cambelt letting go? :(

....and the memory comes back to me...It´s the exact same rattling noise, that my dear wife described me over the phone with the car before this (hdi90). And a few minutes later after I´d told her to drive the car back home, i got a call.... The pieces of the shattered pulley cause a massive engine failure. Not the worst possible thou, so with a shitload of money, luckily wasn´t mine, it was brought back from the gates of car hell (I assume that´s where all the 6´s go when their time is up.....). Nick, have strenght, you´ll b able to fix it, I´m sure... 8)

Well the thing is, that I don´t exactly know. The previous car was owned by my father-in-laws construction company, and they (he) ended up paying the bill.... I only picked it up when it was fixed 8) All I heard the "archiebunker" say was that it did not damage the valves but some some other components it did. And the guy at the Peugeot service had said that we were unbelievably lucky that the pulley didn´t cause any more damage...So what I understood of it was that it certainly is a matter of luck when the pulley gives in. How the bits and pieces fly around destroying the expensive parts, you never know.

Oh, one more thing the service guy had said that my wife shouldn´t have tried to drive the car home after she had heard the rattling sound....But how the hell was she to know..

thats the crankshaft pulley, it looks like the woodruff key let go and the pulley sheard clean off, you will need another engine or crankshaft, but its just easier to change the engine, not uncommon on the XUD9BTF
