Air in fuel line & cleaning injectors...

Can somebody tell me the best way to bleed the fuel system on my 1.9TD
I also intend to put diesel treatment into the fuel filter to give the injectors etc
a good clean through. I am certain that there is a blockage somewhere.
I have been struggling with a starting problem, i,m pretty certain now the
trouble lies here. So i need to make sure she,s spot on as regards fuelling
Diesel engine experts please what,s your proven procedure ? :?:

Have you seen air bubbles in the pipe between the filter and pump?

I normally add the injector cleaner to half a tank of diesel. But i have heard of people pouring a lock into the filter housing. Get confirmation of house much to add before you go ahead as i wouldnt know.

If you are adding it straight into the filter then when you are putting on the filters cap (4 torx bolts) put some loctite on the threads, and tighten them up brave and good.


Follow the clear pipe than runs from the top of the filter to the pump. Where it is bolted onto the pump is know as the fuel inlet union.

On my lucas pumped 306 the union had an 8mm bleed screw on the union, similar to the type you have on your brake callipers for bleeding.
On my bosch pumped 306 the union did not have a bleed screw, you just had to loosen the bolt.

So slacken off the bleed screw or bolt, whichever you have, by about 1 turn and proceed to pump the rubber bulb shaped hand primer. Fuel will pour/squirt out the loosened bolt, and hopefully air bubbles will be spluttering out too. Continue to pump the hand primer until fuel free from air squirts out. Then tighten the union again.

Now start the car with your foot the whole way down on the accelerator pedal until she starts.

If you believe theres air in the metal lines to the injectors you may have to slacken off the unions at the injectors, but ask about this as i havn't done it before although i'd persume it just done the same way.... maybe the injectors have to be done in an order though???

Thanks for that bit of info - i wasn,t quite sure of the best way to do it. As i said before she,s been
awkward to start, i tried a few things & checked everything over that i could think of.
Then i played around with the pump primer & attempted to start her up. Result - started just about
right as you would expect. So this now might cure the trouble. Thanks again ......*** :D

did you check the glow plugs?
as funny as it sounds if you tryied to start it and it didnt then you pushed the pump and tryied again it could just been coicedence it started as you have warmed up the cyclinders by cranking

be worth checking them and if they are fine then take a look at what the chap above said :)

Glow - Plugs are brand new, i put new ones in as soon as this problem began.

it sounds like you have a fuel runback problem, they usually only suffer from hot, though if this is happening hot and cold then its most likely that the seals in the distributor pump has failed, could be severly worn injectors, and very rare but has been known to happen excesive swirl chamber protrusion, though unless its done starship mileage this is unlikely
