HELP: Strange liquid and gunkiness! Pics inside

Post by Moos3h »

Hi all,

Anyone shed any light on why this is so gunked up, and whether I need to be worried:

Image

And what this liquid might be, where it might be coming from and if it's related to the above piccie?

Image

It's a 2.0 HDI on an X reg.

The car doesn't seem to be misbehaving, but the fuel economy has dropped to about 43mpg?

Thanks in advance,
James

Well, it could be the rocker cover gasket leaking oil or the oil breather return pipe off the rocker cover leaking.

If it's Diesel leaking then you will have to (very carefully mind) have a sneaky look with the engine running, it could be the Diesel return lines off the injectors. I say be careful because the system runs very high pressure. People have been known to suffer injury messing with High Pressure Diesels.

I would soak up a small sample of the liquid with some kitchen paper and assess if it's oil or diesel first.

I'm not sure WHAT it is! Soaked it up and it's black like oil, but the car isn't using any...

Weird.

Cheers,
James

Ok the first image could be as simple as somebody filling up the oil and missing, so clean it all away and see if it returns.

The second picture is normal, the air dozer does tend to leak, you can replace it but it will start leaking again. My advice if it is not leaking tonnes the leave it alone. If you are woried about it you can get the part and change it your self.
air dozer its a motorized flap that creates a depresson in the inlet manifold so that when EGR is used the gasses are actively sucked into the inlet manifold out of the exhuast
