I Have a 406 HDi 2000 110bhp W Reg estate
Hi, number of things possibly attributed to the above problem:
Just had my engine changed after suffering hydrolock on the old one. During the replacement the mechanic broke the pipe off what I think is a vacuum sensor connected to the top of the large outlet pipe coming off the top off the intercooler.
Too be honest I have run around since the car was repaired with this sensor hanging off as I forgot all about it!
Yesterday going up a hill, the engine management warning lamp came on and wont go off even after I have disconnected the battery for about 5 hours. The handbook said that if this lamp comes on it is related to an injection problem and could damage the cat if continue to run - is this really the case?
Some more background info:
I have repaired the sensor, it was just the nozzle, I reatached it and sealed it in place with araldite and am confident that no adhesive has eneterd the inside of the sensor as I put a dowel down the hole to portect the sensor whilst the glue dried.
When the replacement engine was fitted, the number 4 injector was leaking and there was a lot of carbon build up. i removed the injector, cleaned the fitting and replaced it with an injector from my original engine which was an identical part number. I am wondering since the replacement injector has a much higher mileage on it that this may contribute. But how would the ECU know as I dont think injectors provide any feedback?
Anyway, I would appreciate any feedback or experience of the same nature,
regards
Chris

Hello Buffplums (cool name
)
A Hydro-locked HDi eh? now that's a first on here I believe, you must tell us more! (unless it it too painfull for you, then we would understand
).
The Engine Light is normally brought on by the Throttle Postion Sensor on HDi's they're not too expensive (about £60.00). Having said that, my engine light came on when the radiator cooling fan became worn and started drawing too much current on it's circuit (took ages to track down) but it was indeed enough to bring the light on.
I would see if you can get a Diagnostc check, not with Peugeot if you can help it because they will indeed squeeze your plums for around £65.00. Some independants will run a check for you for around £30.00, this will take some of the guess work out of the problem.
I don't think it will be any thing major.
How did you get on with the engine swap? I know you have to be ubber-carefull with the fuel system to prevent contamination. Did you get an engine complete with fuel pump and common rail etc?
Welly.

I agree with Welly. Get its fault codes read, if you don't you will just waste time and money guessing what is wrong. I'd avoid taking it to pug, my brother code a decent fault code reader off ebay for less than it would cost to have pug read the codes!
With the fault codes at least you will know what the ECU thinks is wrong. Which should tell you what you need to fix, or at least a pointer in the direction.
Would be interested to know what happened to the old HDI too.

Hydro Locking
Cheers Welly, the name came from Reeves and Mortimer one of those silly songs they used to sing and the line went...'you polished yer cash till while I buffed up me plums..."
anyway i digress....
yeah the poor old HDi I got caught on a back road when the rain was bad and I must have gone through about a foot of water and I reckon the car must have drunk quite a bit as when I looked at the air filter it was just a soggy lump!
the trouble was I had to get to a hospital appointment and the damage occured when i tried to restart, she literally locked up. I waited at about 5 min intervals and kept trying, hoping the water would drain through the piston rings. As it happens she did start but ran very rough as you would imagine and I heard a squeal come from the front - bit high pitched like a scream!
I didnt stop and kept her going by the time I got home she was blowing a lot of smoke out the back and going like a tractor.
As to the replacement, I couldnt be a------ed so paid someone to do the work, bought a unit that came out of a right off from some place down in evesham, he reckoned it only had 37K on the clock, bit hard to believe but judging from the state of the alternator (spanking new) and the emissions and smoke test on the MOT were really good - so maybe it was low mileage.
As to the old unit, I stil have it and not sure what to do with it, most people I speak to reckon I have bent one or more con rods, I might wip off the sump and see for myself. Might be worth breaking it and selling the bits on ebay, any thoughts?
Cheers

Warning Light Update
Just update this one,
got back from asda and noticed the warning light has gone out (probably the bulb has blown knowing my luck!). I wonder if its because of that sensor I replaced earlier on tonight and it just needed to work with the system for a little while.
If it comes back tomorrow then I shall update this one,

The Engine light can go out by it'self - sounds like just a glitch, nothing major.
I think it would be hard to bend the rods on a HDi with hydo-lock (Diesels are pretty strong here) but I may be wrong. I would think the problem will be more to do with the piston rings maybe?

the light will go out if the fault doesnt reapear for 3 driving cycles,
as for bending rods on a HDi, its very easy, any water is enough to kill them, even the old 1.9td or 2.1td, if you have to go through deep water, quickly stick it in neutral and switch the engine off,
if you get hydraulic lock then the rods will almost certainly bend, all you could do is take the plugs out and turn the engine over by hand till all the water is expeld and then fit the plugs back and run it, though it may seem to run very well, as the engine management is clever enough to hide most of the diesel knock and piston slap, there will be a lot of blue smoke as you will have poor piston ring sealing
