Engine light came on, pressed on gas but sudden stall
hey guys
i need some advice. recently my 406 1996 2 ltr have been acting up. sometimes when i press on the pedal on low speeds the fuel would feel like it suddenly cut out and then it rushes back and the car jolts. Occasionally the engine light would come on. i just spent 230 for service and the guy said he changed the lambda driver. he also mentioned that the computer mentioned something about ECU defect and it would cost me another 400+ to fix.
Is he telling the truth? i just paid 600 for the car and i really dont wanna fork out another 400++... also he could not fix my steering. whenever i turn either way it would make some blunt noise like as though vibrating. i felt as though some lubricant was gone but he said its normal!??! its getting much louder since.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

is it auto?
it does sound very much like a throttle pot fault, the first thing to do is to go somewhere else and get the fault codes read

you wont pick up any dead spots though unless you've got an ocilloscope though

it is essentially a variable resistor, but if it went open circuit the car would constantly start then stall, it sounds like it may have a dead spot, or an internal short, you could only pick up a dead spot with a scope as your average multimeter wont be sensitive enough

Same problem or same symptoms? There's a very big difference between the two. I would suggest getting the fault codes read as a first step.peterw1983 wrote:i have got the same problem did you sort it out if so what was it so i can do mine

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

sorry for the late reply, i have been out of the country since.... anyway the problem got worst now. i sent it for service whilst i was away. he changed the lambda sensor in the catalytic converter. the sudden stall was still there but it went away after a few days. funny thing now suddenly the car has lost power. it seems as though it is being restricted when i step on the gas.
about the steering i have noticed that it will only make a noise when it is hot out, when its cold there is nothing or at least less noise.
I cant really test them myself cuz i dont have the kits or know how. any advice for me to read somewhere?

remind me to never to go to that garage
changing the oxygen sensor AND the cat for a NON-emissions related problem
this is where i would suggest getting the fault codes read but this will reveal nothing, as the engine management on your car (the same as mine) is so insensitve and wont log a fault or flag the K light
the only time this will happen is if the TDC sensor dies while your driving
its very rare for a throttle pot to go on one of these unless its auto, but its all pointing to this at the moment
