2000 - V Reg 406 Hdi estate.
Hi, I'm replacing the standard 406 stereo with a JVC KD-SH1000.
I have the following bits ready to fit
Facia adapter
406->ISO Wiring harness
406 Steering stalk conversion harness
JVC Steering stalk adapter.
I understand that the connection to the steering wheel stalk remote is not actually behind the stereo. Can someone tell me where to find the connector and what I need to remove to get to it.

As noone seems to know I had a look myself and shall enlighten you 
Below the steering wheel there is a drop-down panel held in place by 3 turn clips, 2 clips to the right of the steering wheel and one t o the left (assuming RHD here). This exposes the fusebox to the right and several groups of plugged wire connectors just under the steering column.
One of the connectors is an oval brown one - this is the stalk controll. The stalk control converter which you have for the aftermarket head unit will have an identical female socket to the OE one.
Unplug the OE connector and tape up the now empty female socket to stop it rattling as you dont need this now.
The OE male connector plugs into the new aftermarket female connector which you have remembered to feed through from the centre console stereo location and thats it done.
There's not a lot of room behind the actual head unit and it's a right bugger to get all the connections tucked out of the way to give you enough room to slide the new stereo in fully. Looking into the area where you are fitting the stereo there is a central bar and a gap to either side so it's a matter of getting the wires into these gaps at the side and keeping them away from the bar in the centre.
What I did was to fasten a cable tie around the ISO connector loom from the new head unit, thread the end of the cable tie through the gap on the passenger side behind the stereo. You can then, after moving a piece of plastic trim, reach from the passenger footwell and grab the cable tie, pulling it to get the wires into the gap as the head unit slides into place.

You just couldn't be ar$ed to help.
It wouldnt have been like this on the subaru forum I vist (scoobynet).
Within seconds I would have had posts saying how their subaru was better than mine and they didnt know why I would bother with a new head unit anyway. That it wasn't a head unit I needed, but a bigger turbo, a Front mounted intercooler and some mudflaps. That JVC were crap and the best way to fit it was to open the top of the wheely bin and drop it in. There would then follow 2 pages of witty, friendly banter where one or more particpants would get a 1week ban from the forum.
The apathy of Pug owners leaves me ashamed to own one.
Maybe the thought of me touching french electrics unaided had you all poised for the follow up post that my windscreen wipers now came on with the brake lights.....

Well, this is no "wikkid kruuz" forum. Were just normal guys with normal cars.
There's not many of us on here (10 to 15 regular posters) and sometimes threads don't get much response it just depends who sees them.
I always view my 'posts since last visit' but sometimes once they've gone off the list you can forget about them

I was being tongue-in cheek scarcastic, I mean no disprect to yourself or the forum and apologise if any was read from my post.
I'm glad I found this site I'm sure it will be a useful resource as my 406Hdi motorway workhorse clocks up the miles. So far in 79k, apart from service parts, I've only had to replace an anti-rollbar stabiliser when it started knocking so touch wood it will continue to serve me well.

We are all pretty laid back when stuff goes wrong with our cars, in fact it's more of a joke, like who's next? we've come to expect problems.
I've had my fair share of troubles but it still starts and stops, and those long journeys
I don't think there's a better car for long distances.

Argh, it's all coming out now - you are a 'modder' with your fancy remap 
I would love to get mine done (110) but my clutch and DMF are poorly and I am poor at the moment. A few on here have remaps and they all say it makes such a big difference.

Yup I missed this fred too, but I wouldn't have known the answer anyway. 
I know what you mean about space behind the stereo though, I once fitted an aftermarket cd changer to the standard head unit in my D8, with one of those interface boxes that goes behind the stereo, nightmare.
Anyway JVC are shyte, the best way to fit that is to light a bonfire and chuck it on, What you want for your family wagon is an 80mm slam, some phat 26" chrome rims and lots of neons

2.5 years on it still hasn't missed a beat (although it can get fussy about scratched discs when it's too hot. 2 mins of aircon fixes that though and it doesn't matter because at those temperatures there's no sodding way you're getting my skin anywhere near the leather seats
