The big road tax rip off.

As I have to tax my 406 at the end of the month I am aware that I won't be issued with a new disc which is fine but the big "rip off" as I read it is that you can't sell a car on with current tax on it and have to claim it back but only in "full months" which means lets say if you sell it 2 weeks into the month you loose that 2 weeks tax and the new owner will have to tax it from the 1st of that month so also losing 2 weeks tax so the DVLA will gain 1 months tax every time someone sells a car! Well that's the way I read it.

And the tax has been bumped up another £5 this year, its now £145 for the cheaper 110 HDi.

Surprise - removal of tax discs, apparently to reduce costs within DVLA, does not equate to frozen / reductions in tax we have to pay.

If there is a degree of trust between buyer and seller couldn't you just delay sending the V5 until the end of the month?
As long as insurance is sorted it would still be legal as far as ANPR systems are concerned

Did you know that the new Tax Disc system may well drive small car dealers out of business? in effect they will have to Tax the whole forecourt to enable test drives and then reclaim the Tax if and when the car sells. The only other way is to run 'Trade Plates' which apparently are extremely difficult and expensive to gain. Yet another way to drive old inefficient motors off our roads.....social engineering anyone?

I have to Tax her indoors' Ashtray at the end of Sept and for some reason the new monthly DD scheme doesn't start until November WTF? the DD is the only thing I've been looking forward to.

I've got 5 vehicles to tax throughout the year and was waiting for the DD scheme but as you say it doesn't start till Nov.I was listening to a debate about it on the Jeremy Vine show the other day and the head of the DVLA was on there and although the police can use ANPR the DVLA themselves have only got 10 camera cars nationally to check for untaxed cars,WTF!.

Did you know that the Doovla don't check for Insurance anymore when Taxing. I think.

DVLA use the MID to check for insurance when taxing.
As to the 10 ANPR cars, I see no reason why the system could not be changed similarly to the way TV Detector vans work. Someone has a car registered and either taxed or SORNed. If SORNed, then a visual check that it is parked where it is declared to be. If it isn't there, then a FPN could be issued. Same with insurance. Now that everything is computerized there is no need for ANPR cars at all, and the Police could get rid of their unmarked cars, and they could put a presence on the road to do what they are supposed to do. Deter, not prosecute. Of course, that would make it difficult for them to act in their present role as revenue-collectors for HMG.

How about because you can leave it wherever you choose as long as it isn't on / driven on the public highway? Nothing to stop you towing it to garage a to be fixed etc

You have to pay more to pay by DD too, guess that's the premium you're hit with for paying for your tax just before you need it rather than months in advance

I was led to believe you pay 5% more by DD which I think is less than they charge you at the moment for 2 x 6 months?
