Brake question
Before the last bank holiday we were booked to go away and my brake pedal started having that abs feeling under foot, well I've done 25000 miles in it without changing the pads so got them done and they were pretty low (But didn't have time to order disks aswell)
After changing the pads the problem has got worse... Abs light comes on almost straight away sometimes stays on but often go out I've also had a braking fault warning flash up.
Problem is only there when i almost come to a stop...n/s/f disk does have a nice score line on it so I'm wondering if it's disks or an abs fault.. Any ideas before i go ordering disks? (that I can't seem to find on Ebay?

Re: Brake question
Check your ABS reluctor rings are still intact, sensors securely fixed and look for any damage to the sensor wiring. Any of these could have been disturbed during the pad change.

Re: Brake question
All of the diesels, and the 2.2 and 3.0 petrols have a flaw in the reluctor ring design, causing them to crack and sometimes spin uselessly. I had an issue with mine where the ABS would kick on if I hit a bump while braking. It turned out to be a cracked reluctor ring, which was a cheap replacement at my local mechanic.

Re: Brake question
Better get me tools out one day this week then...That would be front rings right?
Another thing i noticed (and we're in the suspension part of the forum) It's started sounding noisy from the back end kind of a clunk like drop link sound maybe?

Re: Brake question
Sounds like the top link's or the rear anti-roll bar links but it could be the trailing arm bushes ect: ect: .
You know the drill, jack up the rear end on axle stands & have a good pull & push sesson with a pry bar

Re: Brake question
First nice day when I've had time to check the rings (the abs light seems to come on soon as i turn right).... So i devised that it could be the pressure put on the near side so jacked that up first and wadya know a cracked abs ring that turns freely....Am going to check the drivers side now then search the forum on how to fix...In the meantime if any of you luvly people come up with a link for me i thank you in advance.

Re: Brake question
I think that's the brake pad wear sensor wiring. Follow the wiring back towards the hub and it should go to a connector which has two single pole plugs in it....one for each pad. This won't bring any lights up on dash, unless the break on the car side has caused the two wires to touch.
If this was the abs sensor, your abs light would be on all the time.

My lmf can get the ring for £14 and his mechanic would charge £30 labour... Is this something to leave to a pro?
Re: Brake question
You can pick up new reluctor rings cheaper than that. (and, it has to be said, a lot more expensive than that too!)
It's not a massive task but you'll need ball joint splitters etc. For £30 labour, let them do it.

I wrote this guide, which is in the knowledge base....viewtopic.php?f=10&t=20950
For 30 quid labour though I'd get them to do it!
I've never used a ball joint splitter to release the ball joint.

Re: Brake question
Cheers guys I think I will after looking at your link john...My lmf had the 90mm in stock already would this be the one i need?
It's quite handy with him having his own mechanic working at the back of the shop I can get him to order the 86mm too and he can send back what don't fit.

Re: Brake question
From my experience you never know what size ring you need unless you measure it before hand!
I do the same...get both then return the one not needed

Re: Brake question
I'll pop down and see him tomorrow.... Is that a 90mm?... Order me a 86 to go with it and book me in..... Oh and while you got the jack out find out what's clunking on my rear end.jasper5 wrote:From my experience you never know what size ring you need unless you measure it before hand!
