I still think that there's not that much wrong with the Pugster and it will still polish up nicely! You'll be sorry to see it go, Sonia....

Don't ask me why but for years now I've always started any car with the clutch pressed in.

Oh wait i know what it is now my last two cars have had shite handbrakes and have had to be left in gear.

If I had somewhere to keep HIM I'd give pugster a new home.

I have the space... but no need for an estate just yet. Would have kept my 406 if I could justify having/needing/wanting two cars.

Realistically, look at how much you'll have to spend to get it to MOT...

Also, just because its a 2.2HDI - doesn't mean its a good car. No point in having one if you can't drive it due to a serious MOT failure...

Right, here goes. :?

It is a shame most of us on the forum were all behind you getting this motor, and some of us still want you to stick with it, including me.

However - you HATE the car, so don't spend money you haven't got on something you don't want. You can throw money at the car all day long and just be left with a sorted car you will want to sell anyway, why bother??

Its probably worth more now than what you paid for it so you may as well part with it and go back to the car you are still really attached too, which works out so much cheaper.

I feel a bit bad about encouraging you to get the 2.2, but you never know with a new car, it might be right or it might be shite....

The worst is in the morning and when it's about 5 degrees: cold, but too warm for pre-heat.
Will give the dipped clutch a try tomorrow morning...

With the noise it could well just be that I've got my ear tuned in now and it's always been there, but there's definitely something there. An aperiodic knock.
 , Always if posible start any car with the clutch in  . It means your not turning over the gearbox  = less strain on the battery & starter + it spins over quicker.

I've decided to get in touch with an old friend who will get his friend (with a garage) to take a quick look over Pugster.
I am not happy nor confident that HiQ did a good enough job whatsoever.

My handbrake is definitely seizing on the NEARSIDE and it's getting worse, a really loud rumble this morning from it.
Plus their 'winter check' was not as in depth as one would hope - even though it was free..

I know they have ticked my shocks are fine so I am starting to question the rear nearside spring (or track rod end) or something like that, I am getting horrendous noises going over the local speed bumps, the whole rear axle sounds - well........ broken
Ok, dramatization, but the noise is well, quite loud and like a squeaky bouncey sort of noise

And after the noises that thing pulled this morning it's fair to say he had another fight with said wheelie bin on the drive still........

£143 says Miss P is road legal again (after swapping insurances over) - Dare me to do it boys, just go on, dare me to do it!
Sonia Luv, thats the rear top links  , quite cheep & straight forward as you can now by the eliptical bolts from the main steeler again :) ,
B.T.Wfor what it's worth I think taking pugster to see jasper5 will be the best thing you have done with him yet, you will get all those jobs sorted & at a very fair price, then you WILL have a trouble free motor that will give you years of service for I recon about £1500 including buying him in the first place  .
So happy day's when you get him back & you can just get on with enjoying him & all that torque n power  .
All the best & good luck with him DDD.

According to Parkers the 2.2 is worth between £1200 and £2500 which is a little rich if you ask me but I'm tight as the proverbial ducks arse.
I also picked mine up 'cheap' at £800 with a few 'minor' issues but would happily spend what I paid again getting it how I want it (but hopefully wont).

Done so far;
Replace coolant sensor (done)
Fix courtesy lights (done)
Replace trim on both wings and grill (done)
Replace sill seal clips (done)
Replace dodgy alloys with my Coupe wheels (done)

To do list;
2 new tyres and tracking, the front tyres from my 1.9 are legal (about 4mm) but that was a 90 and now they have to keep double the horses on the tarmac! (2 Good and 2 V good 17" tyres being sold to a mate and nasty alloy wheels weighed in should just about cover costs)
Replace 200 map with 180 map to stop my neck hurting when boost kicks in
Fix airbag light (guide by Farmerpug)
Fix hand brake (strip down following Jasper5's guide and replace shoes if required, wire brush backplates and hammerite and copper grease everything EXCEPT THE DRUMS AND SHOES)
Swap drivers wing (replacement came with car)(guide by Farmerpug)
Get a couple of bad scratches sorted
Sort dent in sill and fit mud flaps (came still in box with car)
Replace water damaged CD multichanger
Clean and fix SatNav CD reader (not reading disc)
Repair obligitory rip in drivers seat around switches
Check and clean aeriel connector due to occasional crackle from radio (guide by Farmerpug)
Workout why aircon doesn't work

Most of those jobs involve my time and a little effort but little or no cash and having the wealth of knowledge from the 406OC means they are in no way daunting.
So far I've spent just under £10 on bits and £5 on plasters for my scraped knuckles at the breakers.
The body work stuff will be prepped by me then finished off professionally (unless I'm skint then its a rattle can) and theres a place that does interiors a couple of miles away that I'll get a quote for the seat repair from.
Replacing the changer is if funds allow and I spot one at the right price as I probably wont use the thing anyway (FM transmitter off my phone does the same job, same applies if the SatNav is fubar'd).
Aircon is something I've gotten used to not having anyway, its had a new rad and a regas before I had it so if I track down the fault and its cheap then great if not I'm not overly bothered.

As usual there is buckets of advice and help on offer on here so I'd stick with it a bit longer unless anything serious rears its ugly head. I personally like to get to know a new car especially when its not a wallet lightening experience. When its how you want it and you know you've put the effort in its a real sense of achievement and pride.

Having said all that don't throw money at a nail so look at the potentially expensive and neccesary jobs first then decide.

I think you're right - sending it up there will be the best thing I've ever done!
Just trying to sort out financially when I can send it up there.. The long trip up there is definitely scaring me with the thoughts of fuel efficiency and if the clutch is going to go on the way up..
I think I may end up taking it up early January - get Christmas out the way..

I keep thinking, it's just small ish service type stuff, once this is out of the way I might end up with a half decent car...

I don't want to keep it on the off chance I have a decent car and then sell Miss Pug and regret it like my second 205........ I vote one of you lot buys Miss Pug because then I can always beg, borrow steal it back

Ifind that when you buy acar and its under a couple agrand
you end up in the longrun paying more than market value for them by the time you've put everything right. :(
and once you've got to that stage its a car you have to keep or its money thrown down the drain.

ibought the mrs a cheap motor.but looking back at receipts for parts/work - its not so cheap anymore I couid of just
of gone out and bought one out of showroom for same monies you gets whats you pays for a'spose,

Mine cost £4k, already spent £250 and now a DMF+clutch is on the cards. Can you ever spend enough to be certain that it's right? And if you can then is it worth it?

Jasper5 to the rescue then? I made it up there with a squealing clutch. Once you're on the A34 the route is completely grade separated until you get to the M6/M65 junction so no need to use the clutch at all! Take it steady and you should get well over 50mpg.
