Re: braking issue
Check your abs rings on the hubs. The fronts are more prone to failure (cracking/splitting) than the rears. A failed ring can make the abs system think the wheel is locked up and kick in, giving the pedal a different feel.
If it is a ring gone, they are available separately but you have to remove the end of the driveshaft from the hub to get it on. Another option is to replace outer cv joint only as it comes with a new abs ring on.
Last and most expensive option is to fit whole new driveshaft.....
Might not be that of course....

Re: braking issue
the handbrake light only comes on when the ether the brake fluid is low or the switch is faultey. taking the bulb out will not stop the beep
if the abs and handbrake light are on there is sum thing seriously wrong and you should ether investigate it or get some one who knows what thay are doing to look at it

Re: braking issue
A problem with the ABS system won't cause the pedal to go hard. Hardness means you've lost assistance. I guess that could well cause the ABS unit to report a fault (the light). Since it went suddenly and you can brake, I'd suspect a vacuum problem.
Open the bonnet and look at the brake servo (the large round black thing on the bulkhead, passenger side behind the brake fluid reservoir). You should see a hose coming off it and going to somewhere towards the engine. If not, look around for a hose which has fallen off...
Can't think how a vacuum hose would fly off though, unless it's a turbocharged car with a problem with the dump valve and a clogged air filter?

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Re: braking issue
Sorry never got back problem solved was one of the handbrake shoe retaining g pins had popped out and spun its self to death causing the spring to snap and seat itself between the abs sensor and the ring removed the debris problem solved
