HDI (110) - Low Rattle
Had a slightly odd experience today.....
I noticed a couple of months back that when starting from cold, then accelerating away, not fiercely,
there seemed to be a rattle sound from the engine direction. Wasn't sure what it was, or might be
the beginnings of the crankshaft pulley letting me know that it might be time for a change in the
not too distant future. Car is generally a bit of a rough idler when cold.
Anyway this morning I hopped in to drive to the local shop. Drove about half a mile, and the rattle
seemed to suddenly become more pronounced, the engine seemed to become much more sensitive
to the throttle,and running roughly.
I went on the next 3 or 400 yards to the shop. Switched off... thinking **** .Whats gone wrong now ?
Did my shop, got back in, switched on , noticed that the Engine Management Light was lit.
Car seemed a bit better sounding, drove home, and decided to take it to my local garage in the morning
to read the codes.
This evening, drove to a local supermarket, got about a mile down the road, noticed that EML light no longer lit,
rattle seems much as it was before this morning..( possibly a little less,or might be my imagination)

This happened again yesterday.
Started the car, engine suddenly seemed rattly, and the EML came on. Drove down the road to a shop for about a mile.
Switched off. When I returned, and started up again, engine now OK , and after a half mile or so, the EML went out.
Today, I started up, again return of very noticeable rattle, EML on.., and as I drive up road I looked in the mirror.,
and saw very noticable amount of dirty smoke. Drove about a mile, and the smoke seemed to get a bit less.
Switched off, returned 20 mins later, started up.... all OK again.
Is any of this familiar to anyone?

Sounds like a duff sensor -- get your fault codes read!
Probably maf since this is used by the fueling map and black smoke is usually over-fueling or equivalently too little air.
For the crankshaft pulley, I'd expect a noise that's always there and the tone of which varies with engine speed.

As the last time my local garage read, and cleared a code for me.., they charged £35.., looks like
it's time for one of these....

I'm not sure
OBD compliance on diesels was not required until 2004.
I think I've read of some late 406s responding to OBD, but they're under no obligation to do so.
Where are you? Can you find a member with PP2k?

Car is 2000 (W). Just before PP2000 came in, I think (?).
Hope the code-reader/resetter does work, cos immediately after I posted.., I bought one on ebay.
However......, this evening I went out to start the car, turned the key. Won't fire up at all. It turns over
fine, just no sign of firing up.
So I'll wait for the code-reader to arrive, couple of days.
In the meantime, I thought I might disconnect the maf sensor, to see if that makes any difference.
And take it from there.....

pp2000 will work as it came in with the onbord computes so it will work for most pugs and cits bar the ones that have carburetors and points

Thought I'd try to start the car as is, just in case the non-starting was a bit of French

this rattle where in the rev range is it and where does it go away, is it there from idle to 3,200rpm when it ends? or dose it sound like diesel knock like you get on old transit vans

A sound rather like 'pinking' in a petrol engine, more pronounced than the usual diesel rattle. From idle
upwards.
This afternoon, I disconnected the maf sensor. Then went to start the car. For a few moments I thought
it wasn't going to start, then it did. ( I think/hope this may be the computer, in the absence of the maf,
selecting a default program). I've done a 20 mile run this afternoon, parked up a couple of times
to do some supermarket shopping, and each time it's started and run fine, no rattles, no EML light.
So the code reader should be here soon. Looks a little like I'll probably need a new maf sensor, £28 or £29
on eBay from what I can see.

Ah, we now don't know if any MAF related errors are from the original problem or because it was unplugged.
Usual procedure is to clear all codes, drive it (and hope the problem occurs
) then read any new codes.

Code-reader hopefully will arrive tomorrow. I'll see what codes are in there,

Code reader arrived this morning.
I hooked it up, and there were 2 codes showing.
P0230
P0190
I cleared the codes, re-connected the maf sensor, and went to start the car, which it did fine.
I switched off, and rechecked the codes. The same 2 codes had re-appeared.
Now to drive the car to see what happens next, and what other codes appear.

I've driven around over the last 24 hours, maf sensor reconnected, and no problems.
Codes P0230 and P0190 still showing up, even though I've reset them a couple of times.
Thought about what to do next...a few things came to mind.
Oil change due soon. I'm quite thorough about oil + oil filter changes when they're due.
I tend to be a bit casual about air filters.
So I hunted around eBay for quite some time, and managed to find genuine Peugeot oil filter (£3.49), Purflux
air filter, and also a pollen filter... for £15.70 total.
I read through the various threads on here that referred to maf sensors. The brand new Chinese maf's
at around £30.., seem to have a divided opinion. So I've bought a second-user genuine part for £18.
Shall fit it all together in the next few days, then spray EGR cleaner through the inlet system.
Hopefully, I'll see a result ....
