Have I damaged my front disc

Post by jonti007 »

I had a front spring break on me during the winter, after replacement I notice my steering wheel going side to side, (only slightly) but at slow speeds. I don't reckon its wheel balancing as I had that done last autumn and this wobble is at low speeds.
I wondered if I have a damaged disc as a result of the broken spring?
Is there any way I can check this before I spend £40 or £50 on new discs?
Any help would be appreciated

Check for play in the wheel,
Side to side .. track rod end, bushes etc
Also check for play in wheel 12 o'clock and 6oclock wheel bearing etc

Couid be anything but iwouidnt expect a spring fail wrecking a disc

Forgot to add,

Also don't overlook the tyre it may look good but you never know
Try spare wheel on to rule that one out,

Just to mention Loz, when the spring broke I was driving and everything on the passenger side went south with a bang. the spring was in three pieces when I took it out.
I wonder how easy would it be to knock a disc into warp?
I am going to consider ans check the points you have made and many thanks for that

Damage to a disc would result in a heavy vibration from the brake pedal on braking, plus the steering wheel shaking as you brake.(front disc damage)

As lozz mentioned, check your tyres first....jack up the car and spin the wheels, you should see the tyre out of shape.

Did you replace the top bearing when you replaced the spring?

My bet is on the tyre. Get it to a tyre fitting place and ask them to put it on a wheel-balancing machine that should confirm either way whether the tyre is ok or not

Unlikely a spring would take out a brake disc, especially given the symptoms. If the tyre's ok, then my money's on either the bottom ball joint or track rod haven't been done up tightly, or the drop link's shot. In short, anything with a ball joint might not be right

Thanks guys , there is a lot for me to check and I will do all that has been offered. I did fit a new top bearing when I fitted the spring, it had been damaged as well.
I will start with the tyres
