Slight leak?

Post by scotty73 »

Last weekend before a trip i checked the water it looked a little low so i topped it up (a little to much) after the trip i noticed about an hour later a little bit of water on the floor underneath so popped the bonnet and i could see water had leaked from the filler cap but could also hear a very faint hissing/ air escaping type noise.

I kept an eye out for water and the water level and by Sunday before we left it had lost about 150 to 200ml of water.... Since coming back it's lost another 200ml I'm not sure if this is common or this shithouse cold winter we've had has put a crack in either the tank or the filler cap... Any ideas?

Where's the leak coming from? There is a leak-off pipe on top of the expansion bottle that drains water under the car if you put too much in. And usually the water level in that bottle only rises when the car is hot...

It's coming through under the cap it could be a dodgy rubber in the cap or a split somewhere around the threads for it on the tank... or even a small hole in the cap itself not sure... I guess i should pop the bonnet and let the engine warm up and see if i get sprayed with water  ... I don't think it's happening all the time though because sometimes the area on top of the tank is dry then other times you can see a trickle of water.
