Timing belt replacement

Post by FarmerPug »

Im half way through the timing belt change, but one question is the 8mm bolts to lock the camshaft and the flywheel is that the same as m8 bolts, and the bolt hole for the flywheel, ive removed the starter, is it that hole cast into the engine block does the bolt go through it into the flywheel?

Yeah mate, M8's should do the job. Only problem ya might have is the hex head on the bolt?
Will be ok for the cam, but I bought a piece of 8mm bar an cut a bit off to lock the flywheel off on mine.
Sounds like your puttin it in the right hole though  and I took the starter out on mine. If ya crank the engine over by hand and keep an eye on the flywheel then you will see the locator for lining it up and locking it off..

Just remembered, there is a very useful guide in the knowledge based articles:

ive got the guide just incase, everything is ok just quit for the night at this point and want to be sure for tommorow how to lock into TDC

The only reason i ask is because that guide is for a hdi 90 ive got a HDi 110 is there a bit of a difference in locking the flywheel for the two engines?

Mine is the 110 too mate so guide should serve you well, it certainly helped me out and I'm no expert!!
There is another bit if info regarding the three bolts on camshaft wheel?
Think it's on the knowledge base also but you have to loosen the three bolts off when you tensioning to make sure that your locking pin stays central in the cut out of cam wheel...I think??? :)

Got the job done, used drill bits instead of bolts, near sh*t myself when the 2 didnt line up, but i had my cousin come round and we put the camshaft back 1 tooth and they lined up perfect, all back together and the car hasnt exploded.

The timing belt cover is a fiddly bastid to get on and off.

I also changed the crankshaft oil seal, when i put the new one in i used the sprocket that goes over it to push it on home, though it still sat proud about 1mm, when i put the crankshaft pulley back on i used an impact wrench so hopefully it will have snugged it in tight, or will it?

it will be fine if the seal lip is riding on a constant diameter that is untaperd

A week on and the car has drove fine, still has the same amount of power, no smoke, no problems revving, no rattly noises or pistons hitting valves so the job has been a sucess, the water temperature even seems to stay at a slightly lower temperature now.
