help with Blown turbo clanking noise.
I have a peugeot 406 1.9 td with a blown turbo. Car blew the turbo and the engine wouldnt switch off after turning off the ignition. This lasted for 10 mins and then the engine stopped. It seems to have burned some of the engine oil but not all and I have put about 2.25 ltrs back in to get it back onto the middle of the dip. There is a clanking noise from the top of the engine in the middle when its ticking over which can disappear but gets worse if the oil from the sump starts to be pumped into the engine and it throws out black smoke as a result and starts to speed up. What Im trying to ascertain is whether the engine is goosed or the blown turbo is causing the clanking noise.
Any ideas?

it could be ether of the two you will have to fix on to fined or fix it i would just put an engine in it and fix both at the same time
the knock is because there is fuel in the cylinder too soon in the compression stroke so it could be the oil that's in the induction system or an injector

yeah that was the conclusion in was coming to, so im wondering if I should just get a 2nd H turno and replace it as then rest of the engine sounds fine, no nasty noises anywhere else

the haynes manual says to take the engine out but i think it can be done with the engine in place from underneath

Yeah I think the engine is shot too so its an engine out job...any tips on this?

I have seen a good friend of mine remove a turbo from a 406 hdi and 407 hdi without removing the engine. He removed both top right engine mounts and this allowed him to lever the engine block away from the bulkhead while supported on a trolly jack. This gave him just enough room to get his shovel's at the turbo. Its probably not recommended by most mechanics but it worked for him.

I've done a turbo on a 2.2 / 607 from below. Was a bitch but got it in there.
However removing the engine on a 406 is pretty easy, so I would probably just do that.

Hmm.... You can try one or the other. Naturally easier with the engine out. The hardest parts I found were the high pressure oil feed (trying to get it t thread in was a right arse at both ends. For goodness sake don't make the same mistake I did, use new seals on the pipe!) or the EGR pipe clip which had me eating my hat with temper trying to get back onJonnyH wrote:Yeah I think the engine is shot too so its an engine out job...any tips on this?

Remember 1.9's had 2 different turbo setups; earlier cars had the K14 which was bigger and used a different feed pipe. Later cars from 1998 onwards used the Garrett GT15/K03 as it was smaller for a less laggy drive. I wouldn't be surprised if your engine has the GT15, I've seen too many of these with snapped shafts... If you get a different turbo from your own make sure you get the pipes with it too (turbo to cooler, filter to turbo etc) or it just won't fit
To get the turbo out with the engine in situ you need to take off both the left and right hand engine mounts then let the engine down on a jack to allow the engine to come foreward enough to let the turbo out. You don't need to remove the bottom one. If still finding this difficult remove the manifold studs. You don't necessarily have to remove the inlet mani

Either way, I've done both on my build thread here. Fairly pic heavy...

Ive swapped a turbo in situ on a 306 DT and i would never, ever contemplate doing it again in situ. Absolute sod of a job, if you've doubts on how good the engine is anyway i'd say whip the lot out and replace it with a good lump!
