If reliability is your top priority then you're not going to get much better than a 406. Check it's in good condition and has been well looked after, don't worry too much about mileage, 406s don't bat an eyelid at 200,000+ miles.
I'm just over in Cambridge if you need diagnostics etc.
Good luck in your search!

Cheers mate
yeah im not fussed with high mileage.. Like you say as long as its been well looked after and had regular oil changes..
Do you know if either the 1.9 or 2.1 engines were ever fitted to the face lift models?
And if any model cam with cruise control?
Cheers!

Re: Newbie from Essex
The 1.9 and 2.1 XUD engines were only ever fitted to the D8 (pre-facelift) cars.
For the D8s, only the higher spec V6s were fitted with cruise (none of the diesels). For the D9s, many were fitted with cruise, and is a reasonably easy retrofit on almost all models I believe (someone will elaborate further I'm sure).

Yes, I attempted to fit it do to my D8 2.1 but it turned out to be far too difficult
Spec level makes little difference to price at this age, so you're best off just buying one with cruise fitted

Great cheers mate
Im actually looking at a car the same as you have.. 2002 2.2 HDI estate.
It needs a new manifold gasket - have you any advice on how to do it? Or where to look?
Ive searched everywhere with no success? Id love a 'how-to'!!

Re: Newbie from Essex
I believe access is the main problem, on the XUD you get more room by jacking the engine off it's offside mount and easing it forwards.
Is it possible to have a look under the car before you buy? I'm just thinking the exhaust flexi is prone to damage from a worn lower mount and may not be a leaky gasket causing the problems.
Excessive engine movement is usually a sign of lower mount being knackered.

I saw the car I think you're referring to, and suspect it may not be the exhaust gasket, (as I've never heard of one leaking).
I stress, this is only my suspicison it may be as the ad. says. If so the only real problem is access. if not.....
The flexible section of exhaust downpipe is more prone to fail and it's part and parcel of the catalytic coverter, which will probably rush you £150, if you can persuade someone to sell you a non type approved cat, otherwise, loads more. I got someone to weld a replacement flexi-section into my last one - that still cost me over £60 and took all day.
I may be miles off the mark, but I think it would pay to check if you can.
