steve_earwig wrote:Is anyone else investigating a dash cam? I was reminded of it yesterday when a Merc that was parked up on the kerb just pulled out on me without indicating while I was overtaking it, it then drove about 10 meters and turned right, again without indicating

I've looked on ebay and there are loads but I'm not sure if I trust the feedback, there also seem to be a fair few knock-offs about. I've looked on Amazon and there are some interesting reviews - can't read a numberplate at anything over 2 meters, it kept falling off the windscreen, the locking screw doesn't etc. etc. There are also some reviews on youtube. I was thinking it would be nice to have something small and unobtrusive but they don't seem to be powered off the car and then you've got to deal with batteries and again the video quality doesn't seem too hot. Some of the larger ones seem ok, but then you've got something hanging down the windscreen with wires trailing about everywhere. But I guess you don't have to drive about with the screen folded down, and I suspect I could wire the power into the overhead console.

The one that's caught my eye just now is this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Prestigio-Road- ... 398&sr=1-2
There are a few vids on youtube using it http://www.youtube.com/results?search_q ... tHmvIputzY
It's cheaper on ebay (some with free SD card but no mention of class - anything less than 10 doesn't cut the mustard) http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=p ... hd1&crdt=0

The most promising thing is I can get one here for a good price (which is surprising in the land of slim choices and rip off prices) http://www.diskont24.com/product.php?productid=102535 (that's about 34 quid) which does away with the usual worry of it either dying in the post or having to return it because it's crap.

The only downsides seem to be it's a bit more money than I was hoping to spend (but I suspect you get what you pay for) and it's bluddy Chinese again, but then they all seem to be :(

Any thoughts?

i can only assume that there are certain insurance companies that will offer cheaper deals if this is fitted???
i ticked the NO box.
reason being something like this:
if i wanna do 95mph on a dry ,straight, traffic free road at 3 o clock in the morning then i will and thats my choice to do that , but then having some busy body seeing you've done this and deciding that you are the spawn of satan to the rest of the motoring public, and hiking your premium is wrong.
on board cameras i think aint a bad idea as it essentially is benifiting you and not really "spying " on your driving habits
So, you think it's fine for you to break the law? That behaviour is ok untill something unexpected happens, resulting in a claim, resulting in higher premiums for the rest of us.
If we choose what laws to obey, thats not a good place to be. Someone might choose not to obey the burglery laws and pinch your car forinstance.
imo there's going faster than the indicated speed limit allows and then there's doin it with other road users/doing it dangeously. like i said traffic free road ya want to give it some beans sometimes i think most people would or do
as for pinching my car with the problems i got with it that would be perfect about now, or if steve could arrrange a croation driver to come round my neck of the woods that would be great

I was thinking only the other day: "the things you see when you haven't got your gun", which got me thinking about this. Although I think I'd want one at the back because the tailgating has been getting really bad recently.

Some of those you suggest look rather large and intrusive.

What about:
this one that fits onto the sun visor: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221159724715
or something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/320818744270

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

I don't really want to get dragged into this, but:

Shhh! Someone might think that's a good idea :supafrisk:

They've been talking about putting telemetrics in cars for years so I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet.

There's one which has a second camera pointing backwards in the link Jasper posted (although I still didn't work out who was talking about which camera in that yet  )

And having the sun visor down all the time isn't?
What about:

Yes, we know some of the photos are clearly not in the UK / in a RHD vehicle; they were taken by the managing director (an Englishman) in Spain.
Yet even with all that sunshine you still can't make out a single numberplate in any of those pictures
Night shot? Time periods? Comes on with engine?

That seems to be the problem with all the small ones I looked at, lack of features and poor video. I know some of these we're looking at seem rather obtrusive but I don't suppose you're meant to drive about with the screen open, what I'm hoping is they'll be just at the top of the screen on the other side of the rear view mirror and not anywhere that would block out anything to worry about. Unless you're watching for low flying aircraft
