If I were you I'd avoid the 2l model and go for the later-model V6 auto - ES9J4S engine and the ZF gearbox (the 2.0 autos all came with PSA's own AL4 autobox which isn't as good).

This one is the full SE model (leather interior, all the toys), and has just had its cambelt changed 1000 miles ago:

Yes, the ZF 4HP20 is a 4-speed gearbox - but it is apparently a bit sportier, and seems to be a stronger, better-made box than the PSA AL4.

I've never driven an auto myself, but the guys in the Coupe club seem to agree that the ZF box is a better component; I know Tatsfield likes to mention how good the ZF box is, especially when coupled to the later V6 engine (he has two V6 autos, an ES9J4 and and ES9J4S).

Apparently the ES9J4S doesn't get much worse mileage than the 2.2 EW12J4 petrol engine (though the autobox version will have a higher fuel burn than the manual). The road tax on them is exactly the same too (£270 per year), and the insurance costs won't be all that different. I am actually starting to regret not holding out for a V6 (though the cambelt costs are significantly higher - hence why I found one for Lozz that had already had that work done recently).

The V6 is an awesome engine - I miss the push it gave at 4,000 rpm in 5th gear :(
Remember - it only takes a few inches of water to drown a 406 don't make the same mistake I made! The V6 Exec is no more.

Keep seeing how cheap 406's are getting and wondering why I bought my Mondeo.
My Mondeo right now needs a major service (£100), two new year tyres (Goodyear efficient grips at £240 for two!) and two new timing belts (£480) ohhh and then there's the brakes that need changing! (£200)

Highish miles, not much room for the dogs, black is only for people who wash it twice a day, but otherwise pretty smucking fart.

On a serious note, I think it's not the cheapest age/mileage/spec/price balance I've seen. Remember one guy who brought round an immaculate 52 plate 80,000 miler coupe for a remap/defap last summer - said he'd paid £1200 for it. We went for a test drive & it was smooth as silk and entirely rattle free. He may well have bought it with an obvious FAP problem, (which I did with 'Nitric'). Don't let it put you off - they ALL have the problem, it's when, not if.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)
