bio diesel

Post by gumby6371 »

i know all you hdi boys are dubious about running bio but I've found a guy on ebay selling bio for £1.10 a litre I'm planning to run my xud on. He's in Burton on Trent and will deliver for free within a 40 mile radius on a 100 litre minimum order. It's independently tested to the required standard so well worth a go. Any one interested search bio on ebay and save yourself 30p a litre at the pump.

This makes the Bosch conversion so tempting.

Let us know how you get on :)

If you got a bosch fuel pump just use vegtable oil.
You are still going to have the same issues with gelling up in winter weather you use bio or vegtable oil.

In the summer use 100% veg with a glug of two stroke oil.
In autmn use 5% petrol with a glug of two stroke oil with a single dose of millers eco max to up the cetane.
In winter use 10% petrol with a good glug of two stroke and a double dose of millers ecomax.

Add the petrol and aditives before the oil to make sure they mix correctley.

Other than adjusting the timing slightly if you are pedantic like me then there is nothing else you have to do!
Mine used to run superbly on vegtable oil.

jon you can run pretty much any diesel on bio as long as its well made just add a couple of gallon of Derv to a full tank. And being delivered toyour door its a no brainer. Im struggling to source wvo so i'm paying a pound a litre for new veg and mixing it with diesel 50/50 so at 1.10 for bio i'm making a bigger saving. Probably put it in the other halfs 307 50 50 as well

ive seen all lucas stuff on the net,

The lucas will run veg oil,so it says, but it carnt handle cold veg oil,
in someplaces they say if it dont break it straight away it eventualy will, (not worth the gamble,)

Yeah generally the shaft between the pully and the pump snaps due to the viscosity of the cold veg oil. Generally only happens when cranking.

Interesting to know, cheers guys. No I won't be taking the gamble, but I'm still considering having the Bosch conversion done. Can get it done for £190 not including the pump itself, but I don't think I really do enough miles at the moment to make it worth it.

Only put diesel in any common rail, e.g. HDI, diesel. We get many dead modern diesels where some know it all has said it'll be fine on veg. It wont.
However, an xud with the Lucas pump seem to love the stuff. Not putting it in mine, as it does mostly short trips and not a lot of mileage either.

HDi is fine on WELL MADE bio! If it's not well made then it won't last 5 mins!

Do you mean the Bosch pump? Yours is the 1.9l XUD (XUD9) which has the Bosch pump as standard, the 2.1l XUD (XUD11) has the Lucas system.

The seller states bio diesel and not veg oil, bio diesel has been approved by a few of the big motor companies now for 100% use in new vehicles.
The seller states it's independently tested to EN 14214 standard which is the same as the stuff the mix with pump diesel. It has to be tested before it can legally be sold to the public.
If that's correct I can't see a problem.

Throwing in 20-25% derv in the cold weather should sort out any problems with it thickening as it's a lot less viscous than veg anyway.

Yes, most diesels will run on correctly made BD, and certainly the HDI is tried and tested on bio, plenty of people running it. However it is unfortunately the case that commercially made BD is often of very poor quality, certified or otherwise. There are a couple of basic tests that you can do on BD to check that it has been reacted fully and you won't get soaps dropping out. Ask you supplier for a sample and have a read on http://www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk for more details. However if it’s an XUD it’s unlikely to complain.

Another thing you must satisfy yourself of is that the fuel is duty paid, as ultimately it is your responsibility for what is in your tank.

Also look into misfuel if you have an XUD. I blend my WVO with 25% misfuel collected from garages that run recovery trucks. Easy to get, free and ready to pour in the tank :D
