not sure what to try next,
its got a shudder in 4th take your foot off the loud pedal and it smooths out or fire it into 5th and its smooth,
only happens in 4th
im thinking bad map file= not sure wether theyve been at the ecu
Generally there won't be any difference in map in gears 3rd and onwards. There is a torque limiter in first and more than likley a limiter in 2nd.
The front wishbones have hydrobushings. Essentially a bush that contains fluid instead of rubber. Get these checked out!
If you bought it off a trader you get 3 months parts and labour warrenty by law. If you're not satisfied pull the sale of good act 1979 on them and state the car is not fit for purpose.

Are you sure its not wheel balancing? in 4th you'll be doing around 65mph when this sort of thing shows itself. When I collected mine is was shuddering when accelerating at motorway speeds but it was a balancing problem.
Like I said before the S40 is *extremely* sensitive, everything has to be spot on. I've just collected (yesterday) two more chassis 'stays' for the rear so I can get the alignment done (again) for the Winter Tyres to be correct this weekend.
Something else to check: Volvo regularly update the software when the car has Dealer services - maybe yours is out of date? they will do it for £30.00 - it wouldn't hurt to go and try it - I think they offer to do a free 'Winter Check' and you can add the software update for £30.00 (and then ignore whatever else they think your car needs). I'm sure other owners have had jerking/flat spots which have been cured with updates.

They really need to drive it and get some live data whilst this problem occurs to see if its an electrical fault or something.
There's a guy on the Volvo forum called 'copperknob' who is a master tech at a dealer - he's very knowledgeable (although mostly ignored ) maybe you could join up and ask about this? (volvoforums.org)

Yes they don't feel like you can bomb around in them, they feel a bit reluctant to dart about like a hatchback but then they're a bigger motor. Long runs are a breeze and the car generally sits planted and very stable.
They're funny in a way, they don't encourage you to push it round corners etc (you don't feel like you should) but when you do they are very capable - loads of grip and feedback at the limit and very little body roll.
