I remember the old V70 used to come with a 2 litre 5cyl lump, like the 850 before it. The original V40/S40 I was sure only had 4cyl engines, the 2 litre (actually is a 1.9) engine on Auto Trader says it 136bhp. I can't find any of the later shape with a 2 litre petrol engine.

There's a stonking looking V70 on a S plate just down the road from work, but at £1600 it can stay there

ihad alook over the v40.
luvly car, low miles and mint condition,
they told me it had just had a new water pipe fitted (Metal one)
apparantly the old one had blown.

Alarm bells there, so isaid ok il think about it as you do.

that put me off it straight away,
theres a few more ive seen but high miles and no service history, for that kind of money iwill sit and wait for the right one to pop up

I know what you mean, it's ok if you notice straight away and pull over but at the same time if you don't notice you can run the engine too hot and damage the head. Most ECU's cut everything when the water temp goes above 105 deg I think? so should be safeguarded but who knows.

I haven't even looked to be honest John, my plan is to leave it there until the emotional attachment fades and then either break it or sell it as is. I suppose I should at least try and get the fuel regulator off and take it from there but I just can't be arsed! I've spent £650 on it this year and over a grand last year so I really don't fancy spending any more on it :(
Breaking it would be the best thing to do financially but I don't think I can face that, besides I can't help thinking that it's a shame to break such a lovely car over what might be a very simple fix. I'd like to see it fetch funds approaching a grand but it's already in my way so no sensible offer would be refused!!

It'd be a crying shame to break it Dai, but I know needs must :(
It's a shame because I'm quite familiar with the engine now what with the V40 being direct injection as well, I would have bought it off you.

I've just had a bit of spanner time with the new V40 due to squealing fanbelt syndrome, they're not self adjusting on these
It's got a separate belt for the alternator & the PAS pump/aircon and they're both shot, job for the weekend!

Yours is the GDi Mitsubishi engine?

One important tip with these engines, apologies if you already knew, they had a throttle body fault on these engines and the inlet manifold furring up with black gunge, you should fit a very good quality injection cleaner every 3 months to keep the engine healthy ....something like Forte.

I've done loads of those belts, very common problem.

Just a note to remember that my son is a mechanic at a Volvo dealer, so if anyone needs any technical info just ask.
