Just got a 04, 406 hdi S,silver,86k miles, last week.
its a long story but basically a few months i got a cat C 306 hdi of a dealer,when i applied for the tax book it turned out it was cat B an he had to take it back so its been replaced by the 406.
Good driving car it is but the bodyworks a bit dog rough.its never been painted before but the woman had it before me must not have been a good driver.
there is more dinges,knocks and scrapes around it.half kinda regret buying it now although I will say it drives as new,excellent interior but just the external appearance really lets it down badly.I didnt actually see the car when i bought it,my father was at the guys house to buy it and he described it over the phone to me but if i had seen the car,i think i would have walked away,even though i only give 1200 for it.real nice to drive but i think its gonna be a car i will take no pride in because of the bodywork.Im actually a bodywork guy by trade but im just employed by a firm an have no garage at home to fix the car so just going to drive it as it is and also there is only one car in our household so its needed on the road 24/7.I will probably just roughly hammer the bad dents out with a hammer and some old wood and it will have to do the job.Front an rear bumpers are the worst areas on the car,looks like its been run up a few pebble dashed walls in its day.Even if i had those fixed,i think i could live with it better but,its needed 24/7 now its here.first job to do is timing belt,i rang the dealer in scotland that supplied it new for the history and they were able to tell me its never had a belt fitted so thats a big must to do that,even if i do decide its not the car for me and i sell it on.If it wasnt for the bodywork though it was a sure fire keeper.Only other thing I will say against it,it wouldnt really get the pulse racing but a remap may help things if i opt to keep it,pretty uncertain at this point though.

decided after all to keep the car.
after 2 weeks ownership its going well so far.changed timing belt on tues night past and just as well,the old one was on the last legs,
future plans....paint bumpers on the car,probably the worst part on this particular car.last owner couldnt drive it by the look of it.
The bumpers on it have had more hits than the beatles!
only thing missing of this car...sat nav remote

That's a great car for £1,200.00 you should run it and keep it.

My 406 was a bit rough in places but I liked how I could just flop into it and drive/park wherever I wanted without worrying about it. I'm so anal about my 'new' car it spoils things sometimes (like parking it 16 miles from the supermarket just to be sure).

The 406's side panels dent very easily but can be fixed with smart dent removal (I'm sure you're familiar being in the trade) so maybe once you get used to the car you might treat it to some cosmetic improvements?

Is it a 90 or 110 bhp? if it's a 110 then you'll need to check the rear lower engine mount as these wear out and let the engine move about too much (damaging the eggsauce flexi and even the intercooler - I had both). Blip the throttle while watching the engine and if it lurches forward by more than about 40mm then the mount is goosed - with a new mount the engine hardly moves. Makes for a *much* better drive with a new mount you'll be amazed.

Also, invest in a strut brace from a V6 Coupe - cheap as chips on eBay (look up member Ade1122 on eBay, or on the 406 Coupe Club forums) and they really help firm up the front-end and make for a better-handling 406. They are also really easy to fit - you just need a T55 Torx driver, you get your car on as even a surface as possible, flip the bonnet up, take off the three bolts from each suspension turret top, put the brace on, and put in some slightly longer bolts (normally supplied with the 2nd-hand strut braces). Easy, and takes about 15 minutes. Even I could do it (and I did!)

(Note - the strut brace is recommended in addition to the replacement engine mount, not instead of! )

its a 90 brake
i have a funny feeling the egr needs a clean,a bit spluttery an dead about 15k
it had an elderly ownere and spent most of its life in glasgow so i recken its done town miles mainly
keeping an eye out for this remote for it.wrote a letter to the last owner to see if they have it(i got the car of a guy in the trade) so hopefully it will be fruitful and i get the remote for it,if not,ebay.

Hi & welcome You should be able to find a remote on ebay.But my sat nav has not worked for years.I wont read the disc.Tried cleaning the laser,tried a new disc but no joy.But you still need the remote for setting the clock etc.

I would make sure the wheels are straight as well to prevent the struts from accidentily moving from being under load

I used to be quite anal about where I parked my car - certain spots in the supermarket I used to always try and get to prevent damage
However since the hailstorm damage, there seems little point, especially now i'm up the gym up to 2 or 3 times a day and sometimes it's a problem just getting a parking space, never mind finding one where the car won't taking any hits from inconsiderate arses, but even so, it still bothers me

By the way, I have a brand new Peugeot supplied Lower engine mount surplus to requirement, I keep meaning to sell if yours is goosed

my mounts are all fine and dandy as this car wasnt subject to hard driving.
it had an elderly owner so it probably didnt cross 50.it was serviced all its life by melvin motors peugeot in glasgow and anything it need,on paperwork,it seems to have got gen peugeot stuff.
Regarding a strut brase,it something i wont need as i dont plan to do any flash driving.i use a motorcycle for the work commute and this car is just to take kids to school and a sunday run.im not a fast driver.
just got a tin off wynns egr spray an put it through her along with a new air filter.have any of you used egr spray?
simple procedure,split the air box,rev the car to 2k and blast it down the intake in bursts.

I personally think off the brace as more a safety feature than performance as greatly reduces under steer in the wet
