Back from hols !

Post by grasmere59 »

Well got back yesterday from 16 soggy days in Cornwall.First time i've towed the caravan with the 406 and it did just under 1300 miles (600 odd towing at 55-60 mph) and it never missed a beat,it managed with the 1350kgs caravan and the car fully loaded with 2 dogs in the back reasonably well although on the A361 to Barnstable up one of those long inclines i had to drop to 3rd at one point and the oil temp shot up to 130 ish degs and the coolant temp started to creep up from the usual 90 deg towards the red so i put the heater and blower on full and that dragged the coolant temp back down but the oil took longer to drop back to 120 ish,if i saw a big hill coming i just whacked the heater on before we got to it!
Overall it managed 38-40 mpg combined towing and solo which i thought was very reasonable as the bmw only did 22-25 mpg last year on the same hol.Apart from the rubbish weather and me breaking my toe on the last day the hol was o.k. but might head for east coast next year as Cornwall will have floated away by then!

I've found that i'm getting an average of 32mpg with the van i'm quite happy with that, it was indeed soggy down that way although i didn't go down as far as Cornwall. I even had to move my van on Wednesday it was belting it down and by the time it took me to have a shower i had about 3 inches of water in my awning to come back to.

Even that didn't spoil my holiday i was wading around the awning with flip flops on and a smile on my face, the puddle was still there when we left yesterday... Someone took pics of it i'll see if i can find them.

Sounds like the 406 did OK, (hope your holiday wasn't too much of a wash-out). If you bear in mind that the oil is effectively cooled by the water, it stands to reason it must always be a bit hotter. My oil temp creeps up whenever the dogmobile's doing anything 'over & above' that which Pug originally intended, but so far, I've never seen any increase in the water temp.

Sorry about the weather - it's a luck of the draw in the uk

Coolant temperature gauges are deliberately slow to show changes - otherwise we'd be driving around scared to death  a colleague of mine had some live data frigged up in his Jap turbo-thing and the coolant was seen to shoot up to 105deg when pressing on but the good old temperature gauge on the dash was oblivious :supafrisk:

When the 406 gets too hot the BSi drops the a/c to free up the load on the engine - mine never did this but then again the a/c didn't ever work long enough to test it :(

The A361 starts about 7 miles from where I live. Its a bugger when you get onto the moors with some of the hills! Still its got of loverly views especially around stoodleigh. Rose Ash is a village near by where my Collie came from!

classy us Welsh  when we sited it on the Saturday there was a bit of a pothole to the left of the step so i bunged 12 cans of boddingtons in the fridgadaire and used the box to fill the hole... it was never seen again until the monsoon came then it just floated away with a full crate of bow and john smiths.

Later salvaged and consumed of course.

Reminds me of our trip to the 24h race at Nurburgring some years ago - we pitched the tent on the only bit of ground that didn't audibly squelch when walked on, fearing more rain. Needn't have worried, it froze every night and started snowing at one point.

Two weeks later it was 28 deg. for the F1 GP.
