PAS Pump
My engine has developed a bit of a squeal and I have found a tiny bit of play on the hydraulic pulley shaft.
Anything I should look out for when I change the pump? I'll be getting a second hand unit.
Regards,
Colin.

Couid be the Aux belt is Fubard,
When was that last changed?

Re: PAS Pump
What engine and car? Perhaps worth putting in your sig.
I would also be suspecting the aux belt tensioner and idler.

Re: PAS Pump
The car is a 1996 1.9 TD, with 250,000 miles on the clock.
I am surprised about what you say abou the pump, but I have to admit there is no leakage or loss of pressure, so I am putting that idea to the bottom of the pile for the moment.
Thanks for the suggestion re aux. belt and tensioner.
I replaced the belt 20,000 miles ago.
The Idler/tesioner feels ok by hand with the belt still on but I guess the only way to be sure is to take the belt off and feel for play. I'll try that next week end.
Anything else I should look for?
Regards,
Colin.

Re: PAS Pump
Check all the frontend accessories whilst the belt is off. Other possibilities for the squeal are the A/C clutch and the alternator pulley bearing.
On mine, the aux belt tensioner mounting failed and started causing the tensioner to lean slightly, which threw the (almost new) belt off. This got wrapped around the idler which also damaged it.
Luckily the engine was only idling so whilst it damaged the timing belt covers it didn't actually touch the belt.
Admittedly mine is the 2.1 which I think has a different type of tensioner to the 1.9, but worth checking!

Re: PAS Pump
Well, that was good advice you gave.
I had a proper look at the Aux Belt on Saturday. The eccentric tensioner wasn't fully nipped up so wasn't tensioning the belt correctly. The belt had jumped one groove on the crankshaft pulley.
I reset the eccentric tesnioer as best as I could after resetting the belt on the c/shaft pulley and have done 200+ miles, all ok.
The tesioner is difficult to access and I could not find the tensioner ARM location hole. Even to get to the tensioner adjuster square hole I had to cut down an Allen Key.
Anyway, if it happens again, I will be able to do the job in half the time.
Regards,
Colin.

Re: PAS Pump
Excellent, I had a feeling that might be the problem.
They are a bit of a pain to get to, but if it happens again I would consider replacing the tensioner. Either that or do it when you're next working on the car. The damage they can do if they come off and hit the timing belt can be catastrophic.
Anyway, glad it's sorted
