Another thing ive noticed with insurers is, and this realy gets on my goat

here goes

say if you go from a 2.0 to a 1.9 and the insurance is lower you get nil refund
but you make changes and declare it Bang Credit card details please,
Bastards!!!

iknow its not alot but when your scratching about for money to put 2 kids through college every penny counts
if it wernt for that id be running summat with a 3.0 lump and not a 1.9 get me to 60mph in 3 week renault :(

Take it from me - declare your mods

The minute you need to make a claim, your insurance company WILL dump you in the sh*t, and they'll back-charge you the cost of the additional modifications from the start date of your policy (even if you only put them on last week).

These assholes have a license to print money - it is a legalized protection racket. You have no chance to win other than to declare the mods. Phone them up before you put them on and ask what the price difference will be to your insurance if you add this modification.

My own insurance went up £20 for the alloy wheels (pleasantly surprised actually; they said they didn't need to know details of the new wheel / tyre sizes) and £60 for the stainless steel exhaust - however, as long as I can continue driving the Coupe without bending it, I know the insurance prices should (in theory) fall when my renewal comes.

Mod sparingly and always declare it. And when you do mod your can and declare it, get them to send you out a new insurance document to show that your policy recognizes your car's modifications. Else they could still f*ck you over if you have to make a claim by saying that the modifications are not declared, and you haven't a leg to stand on.

isee you point mate,

but the scales shouid be Balanced,
you pay in you shouid get back something out of it, but no there just a bunch of greedy dogs,

say for eg when some kint wrecked you blue 406 did you get back every penny what you paid for it ?

iknow for sure if my car got wrote off id have to walk away, weigh it in at a loss,.

its all wrong mate, seriously abit of bling /plastic change the wheels and you get shafted, a car is a car at the end of the day,
they can get round values just by prices on ebay /autotrader,

Didn't say it was fair - these fuckers have us all over a barrel; there isn't anything anyone can do about it.

Still - declare your mods - otherwise they will screw you out of even more money. It's not worth risking it.
lozz wrote:say for eg when some kint wrecked you blue 406 did you get back every penny what you paid for it ?
Nope. They would have written it off if I hadn't cancelled the claim. The value they gave was £1000, which was fair, but then they wanted to deduct money for the undeclared mods (£350) and to deduct money for the vehicle inspection / valuation (£50) and then they wanted the voluntary excess (£350) so in the end I'd be getting £250 for the car AND I'd be losing my NCB because the other f*cker didn't bother leaving his insurance details. So I cancelled the claim, paid them the £350 for the undeclared mods and £50 for the vehicle inspection. And I cancelled my policy and told the fuckers exactly what I thought of them.

And then I sold the car for scrap - £150. But before the car was scrapped, I got them to remove the wheels and the exhaust. The wheels I sold locally for £75. The exhaust I sold to a forum member for £100 (who then drove all the way up from Kent and collected it!). So in total I got £325 for the car, and didn't lose my NCB (although a not-at-fault accident has been recorded in my insurance profile which does make me a higher risk and liable for higher premiums anyway, the fuckers).

The bottom line is, if I had declared my mods, I wouldn't have been stung so badly when they valued my car. The annoying thing is that I thought I had declared them - but the insurance company has no record of it. And apparently it's because I bought my insurance online rather than over the phone that they know I didn't declare the mods, because when you declare the mods on the website, all the stupid system does is tell you to phone them.

Insurers are total bastards, and their goal in life is to rape your wallet. They will get their way because you are legally required to have insurance, and there is no legal restriction over how much they are allowed to charge you. However, you can stop them from completely f*cking your wallet by playing their game.

If you want the insurance system to change, we need a campaign like FairFuelUK to be set up to petition MPs about car insurance prices and practises. It's not possible to sting these fuckers by not paying insurance as that's illegal, so the only way you're going to get these unfair rules and regulations investigated and changed is through government intervention. And the only way to get the government to intervene is to get as many people as possible to write to their MPs, to involve the national media, and generally get the government to recognize that if they don't address this issue, they won't get re-elected.

The problem is that there's no differentiation between the kinds of mods. When I bought the stainless exhaust I was very conscious that I didn't want to affect the insurance, I simply wanted to replace the original exhaust which had gone rotten, with and equivalent that would last a lifetime, so I asked the company to make it as quiet and subtle as possible. When I rang the insurance company and told them I'd had a custom built stainless exhaust fitted to the car, they said "does it affect performance?" I said "No, and the manufacturer will provide a letter to state that if necessary" :cheesy: , then they said "Has it got a chrome tail pipe?", "Well, yes", "Did the factory fitted one have a chrome tail pipe?", "No", "well that's a cosmetic enhancement then, 10% extra" When the documents came through they just said "Exhaust system changes", I could have put a bloody cherry bomb on it for the same price!!

Every year since then I've just ticked the box that says modifications, and then the one that says "Exhaust system changes"..... Probably paid 10% over the odds every year for 7 years now....
