More rear wheel bearings

Post by Nightshade »

Hi chaps,

Tracked the droning on the rear of my D8 estate down to rear wheel bearings tonight. Can anyone tell me :
A) what size the nut is that retains the drum? We didn't have the right size socket and I suspect 38mm, but not 100%
b) I have drums only on the rear - i.e no disk at all. Anyone know if the bearings need a press? I think from memory that drum bearings just slide onto the shaft, but it's a good few years since I had one off - I don't fancy stripping them to discover that I need a press...

Much thanks in advance

The brake drum comes off seperately.

The bearings are a full hub unit complete with bearings.

Take off the bearing cap, knock back the locking tab, undo the big nut (40mm by all accounts), slide the hub unit off....some people have needed to use a puller to pull the hubs off, but I've always just slid the hub off quite easily.

Don't know if you have ABS, but if you do you need to know how many teeth the ABS ring has.

Clean up the hub shaft and slide the new hub onto the shaft and tighten the nut, knock in the locking tab, refit the bearing cap, refit the brake drum and wheel.
