Speaker size and mounting depths?

Post by FunkyNige »

To save me taking my car to bits then putting it back together, does anyone know the speaker size and mounting depths of the standard speakers on a '97 406 estate? I'm going to be replacing the standard speakers soon as they don't really suit my music taste.

I'm guessing that changing the rear speakers is a waste of time as they're so far away, so I'm just after the size of the front door speakers.

Many thanks.

Nige.

Just 15 threads below this post is this which answers your question. Also if you do a search for 'estate speakers' it's the third result of three.

That thread doesn't have the mounting depths.
The Infinity website says a depth of 3", but that also says I have 5 1/4" speakers on the rear parcel shelf so I don't know how much faith to put in that site.

You can fit 6.5" in the doors but you will also need to cut some material away as the magnets on the rear of any decent speaker will be to big.

Takes 10 min per door with a dremel but make sure you seal the metal you expose due to condensation sending it rusty.

Right then, if anyone wants to change the speakers in an estate here are some helpful hints -

This is all based on changing the rear speakers to Blaupunkt GTx 102HP and the front door speakers and tweeters to Blaupunkt GTc662 components.
One general thing to remeber before attaching the speakers is to try the connector wires each way round to check you're getting the polarity right. Sound will come out both ways, but it will be much louder the correct way.

The connector blocks on the existing speaker wires that connect the standard speakers come apart easily with a small screwdriver, revealing two female connectors. In the front, these slotted straight into my new speakers, but on the back they were too big. I got around this by cutting the wires with connectors that came with my new speakers into lengths about 10cm long and putting a new male connector on the cut end. With the tweeters I had to create a small conecting wire the same way as the rear speakers, then plug this into straight into the connector block within the tweeter assmebly.

Rear (10cm, 4" speakers)
While there is plenty of room for a deep magent, the speakers I bought had a tweeter that stuck out in front of the main speaker by about 7mm. This was only just enough room to fit underneath the C-pillar cover so that's something to keep an eye on when choosing the rear speakers. The speakers I bought also had four brackets to attach them to the car, I had to cut one of these off to make them fit properly.

Front door (165mm, 6.5" speakers)
Once the connector from the orginal wires was removed to reveal the two female connectors, all that was needed to do to fit the speakers was to remove two plastic locating pins that slotted into the orginal speakers (presumably so the factory could line up the holes easier) with a Stanley knife. The speakers I bought slotted straight in without any problems after that.

Tweeters (tiny little things)
No real issues with the tweeters apart from the connectors as mentioned above.

I hope this helps someone else, if you have any questions feel free to ask. It only cost me £65 (from http://www.bluespot.co.uk ) to change all the speakers and has made a huge difference to the quality of sound coming out of the system.

Erk! Sounds like that could damage those speakers (ie. tweeter speeds out and hits the cover) if you stick 'em on at volume...

Never thought of that! I'll do some investigating...
Still bedding in the speakers at the moment so I'm no going to turn them up too loud. I've got my mp3 player to wire in so I'll measure how much space there is at the same time.
