Does anyone know whether the ABS sensor on the rear of a 98 406 is held in with a bolt that has an alan key or torx bit head and what the size of said bit is?
I've done my offside rear wheel bearing today (what an effing game that was) and the ABS sensor is broken.
One of the handbrake retention pin had pulled through the rusty brake shield and seems to have caused the damage.
I also have to find a way of repairing the area where the retention pin holds as with out it one of the new shoes rub on the inside of the drum.
I'm hoping the opposite side goes much better tomorrow.

Re: Bolt size for rear ABS sensor.
Hi
i had exactly the same problem about 2 months ago one of the springs that holds the handbrake shoes came out inside the disc and damaged the abs sensor and the abs ring. I'm pretty sure the bolt is an allen key fitting. It came out fairly easily. I took my sensor off from the front if you have to take the sensor off you will find that you can line a drift up with the pin on the abs sensor by putting the drift through wheel nut hole on the hub be a bit carefull when you whack it with the hammer. I tried pulling it out from behind the backplate it snapped in half even after copious amounts of wd40 and cleaning it all up. I had to take the brake disc and pads off and also back off the handbrake adjuster.Hope that makes sense. Good luck with it. I managed to get another abs sensor for £15 with free delivery on ebay. Seems to be ok i had the abs light on the dash then it went out after i fixed it.

Re: Bolt size for rear ABS sensor.
I get what you mean mate.
The only problem i have is that the previous owner had managed to round off the top allen key bolt so i can't use an allen key in order to get it off.
I get the feeling that the thing will be on quite tight so i have no idea how i'll get the thing off without some serious damage.
i've had a right game trying to change the rear wheel bearing on the drivers side as it was on super tight.
in fact, my crack bar snapped at the head.
In the end i had to drill through the nut to relieve the tension an then it came off really easy.
I can't get the bolts off for the anti-roll linkages either.
they are on to stay so it looks like i'm the car to a garage to get them sorted.

Re: Bolt size for rear ABS sensor.
I've just done my roll bar links today. Its a bit of a fiddly job. I found that using a small 1/4 inch ratchet with a small 17mm socket worked for me. You have just enough room from the top to get a ratchet in i tried using spanners but its a waste of time. If you know anyone thats got a set of halfords ratchet spanners they are good as they will turn through 90 degrees. I soaked it all up with wd40 for a couple of hours beforehand and cleaned all the crap and rust off with a small wire brush. Took about an hour each side. When i put the new ones on i used some copper grease on the threads. My car handles better feels tighter on the back end and the rattly noise has gone. Thats a bit of bad luck what you were saying about the abs bolt. I can't remember if that bolt sits flush or if there is any way to get something on it like a pair of molegrips. If its really bad then you may have to drill it out or use one of those easy out things. I''ll have a look under my car tommorow and see what my one looks like. Also got a bit of patching up to do on the exhaust.

How did you get on mate?
I've just been looking on Peugeot's Service Box and the part that i said was broken by the handbrake retention spring and bolt looks like it's a speed sensor.
I can only assume that it operates for both.
