Look or Ignore?

Post by Bailes1992 »

As I'm getting a sexy 407 in the next few months I'm currently not wanting to spend money on my 406...

But yesterday after a 250 mile round trying to Bristol (Don't ask  ) the car seems to have developed a little knock on the front end.

I'm guessing it's just a drop link.... But should I check? :|

That's entirely up to you Sam! We all know about knocking sounds from the front end, top engine mount rubber, drop links, arb bushes, the list goes on...

Wait until it's there all the time, then the fix will become more obvious rather than changing stuff that don't need doing.

If it's a drop link they're fairly cheap, so I'd change it just so you don't have any problems flogging it (or are you pxing it? I've not been paying attention again  )

If you're going to sell it (& can do the job yourself) get it done. If you're only using it as px, leave it. The dealer will no doubt give himself a healthy 4 figure margin in what he gives you so make him work for the money.

Incidentally, what's your criteria for the coupe - budget, mileage, engine etc? When I looked the other day there weren't many about, but funnily enough there's a small cluster of them within a 15mile radius of here.

There is a Gold one in basingstoke I was going to take a gander at.

I've decided to wait a 2-3 months first to see what sort of cheque the tax man has for me :)

Looking at a 90-100k 2.0 HDi Sport Coupe. Would love one with leather but too pricey so probably a silver one with cloth. Around the £5000 mark.

I think I'm going to look just to make sure it's not the lower ball joint or anything too serious.

Are you really buying a Coupe? I'm surprised you'd get insured?

The 90 Estate hasn't lasted very long then, don't you like it? :o

I bet if you totted up what you've spent/lost on recent cars you could have a couple of Coupe's

Expensive game chopping/changing cars so often :|

My 'record' was buying a brand new Peugeot 106 1.4D...finding out how crap it was.....and changing it for a 405GR 3 months later

Good luck with finding one and take your time to buy something that suits.

I have the option to lend the money off my parents and pay it back over two years if I want a new car.

I love my HDi90, it's a cracking car! (It's a saloon btw ) But they are getting on abit.
I don't drink, or smoke. My hobby is my car (and the GF) the problem is although the interior is mint and mechanically it's bang on the bodywork is terrible.
I want a car I can polish up and think... yeah that looks good! And so far all 3 cars I've had have looked terrible. I want something a little special for a change.

If I change my HDi90 for a 407 Coupe (and go from TPF&T to Comprehensive insurance) my insurance company will refund me £143

problem is Sam the more your car is worth the more you worry about it in asda carparks etc.
while you have an oldish car your not too bothered about who parks next to you, but wait until youve got a newer more expensive car and you walk out of morrisons and some hulk has parked his transit van next to your shiney coupe.........your heart sinks

sometimes its not worth the extra hassle

That's a bit whacky, I do understand what you mean though about cars, mine still hasn't got a single ding/dent/scratch anywhere (mostly due to my parking out of everyone's way) and I do like to keep it so.

Guess thats just something you have to live with.
If I could afford the insurance I would keep my 90 and get a 3.0 V6 407 Coupe for the weekends but it aint gonna happen :(

I can afford the 3.0 V6 coupe but the 90 is my problem

So best of both worlds and get a HDi136 and when I get bored i'l get it remapped.

Yeah I think that will be my plan. Only issue is work where I may have to park in a public/multistory carpark etc.
Allot of the time though sites have their own carpark so it's not too bad.

I think for some reason insurance companies class a 406 as high risk.
Also I also think they must think that because I drive a more expensive car I am more likely to look after it.

sam have you checked out how wide the coupe is ?? We looked at one last year when i was thinking of changing my saloon and we came to the conclusion a coupe wouldnt fit past our house on the driveway like every other car has.
If you gotta park in multi storey's that have steepish ramp the can be an issue with the long front overhang, not trying to put you off one but these are things ive found out since owning a saloon, mine reqularly scrapes coming out of carparks even going at o.oooo1 mph
