It does sound like a pulley. I just had to change it since I had the same exact noise, only a bit more strong. While I was at it I changed the tensioner too. Now it's silent.

I was worried your tie would get snarled-up and cause the cam belt to slip a tooth causing valve damage.

I hadn't really thought about you yourself Image

Balls - they reckon to get rid of the noise I need a new bottom pulley, a new tensioner and an aux belt..... £260 incl labour. Grrrrrrrrrrrr

I wonder what's ACTUALLY needed...

Really don't have time to drive around different garages. Would have investigated myself if I did. This garage is normally quite good - never had an issue with them in the past. Maybe they are right, I don't know...

Pulley £70
Tensioner £60
Aux belt £17
Labour £66
+VAT = £255-ish

Yeah, take the belt off and run it with the aux belt off and have a listen.

The aux belt tensioner looks a bit dodgy in the video.

It's quite an easy job to replace the tensioner, belt, and crank pulley.

The pulley price is about right, the tensioner is much much less here, around 25£, belt can be had for around 15£, and last time I had a garage do that they charged me 1 hour labour which is ~25£
I'm talking about quality parts, not clone ones.

Maybe with 60£ they mean both the tensioner and the roller (if it's the right part name)?

It's definitely the tensioner and the roller, not just one or the other.

We'll see just how much quieter it really is tomorrow! Better be like new........

Talking of "modern" cars - my mum's 54 reg Citroen C4 1.6 HDI is falling to pieces.

1) When going over hard speed bumps (those horrible rubber strip ones), there is a massive clang from the back as if the springs are about to collapse
2) When doing erm... just over the speed limit on the motorway, I had a "Depollution System Defective" message come up along with "Speed Control Faulty" (que?) and no power. Stopped, restarted the car and the speed control one went away along with full power but the dreaded "DSD" message is still on there blinking away. Stupid thing.
3) Engine undertray is falling off
4) Missing cap over headlamp washers and the washers themselves don't work... but rise up anyway.

Glad it's not my car despite being relatively nice and comfortable ....
