DOH!

Mmmm, Volvo, you know if I had the chance I would love a V70, no really I would, like the Police ones, 5 Cyl Turbo.

Hey James, what goes wrong with Volvo's then? anything to watch for?

Not that I'm James you understand but after watching WatchDog on the TV last night (and also the week before) they seem to have a problem with the software on the throttle modules - the equivilent of VOSA in the US has just ordered a recall of several models of Volvo, Volvo in the UK don't seem to interested.

It would seem that due to a software bug occasionally the engine will pop itself into "limp Home Mode" imagine that when you're on your "Private Test" track suddenly being limited to 20MPH in the outside lane.

The software upgrade is free, but in some cases you need a new module - abaht £600 notes

Having said that I would love an 850 T5 R

But I can dream!

avoid 850's, s70's, v70's, c70's, 960's, v90's, s90's and s80's
they all need a small mortgage to keep on the road,

what michael just said is very true, electronic throttle modules are dropping like flies, they break down internally (due to being made in france) and produce a huge loss in power, and usually at the worst possible time, i.e. motorway driving or hard acceleration, they can range between £600 - £1000 just for the module!
and most of them fail outside warranty!

since ford took over the quality of volvo's is awful

but saying that even the pre-ford volvo's, 850's, 960's and all of the '70 series are rubbish, the most common problem is abs ecu failure, i must see at least 3 a week and they range in price from £400 - £1000!

also the automatic gearboxes are just terrible, when they are ok they have got to be some of the best, but once they've gone wrong, at arround 60 - 80,000 miles, they just go straight to the scrap yard, a new auto 'box fitted is arround £5,500

the early 740 and 940 are brilliant they never go wrong,
they must be the only good ones

the early 400 series are crap too, as they have renault engines and electrics, which is never a good combination

Fugging hell, them Volvo's sound crap!

Typically, the oldest 'flying brick' examples are the best

I'm not surprised that Ford's 'that'll do' attitude has infected the Volvo's.

I suppose then that the new Focus RS 5cyl will suffer the same faults, nice engine with loads of cheap tat connected to it.

I viewed a V70 when I was shopping for my estate, 5 years old, 90oddK miles, nice spec, ten grand. For a few grand more I got my pug, 6 months old, 3.5K miles and an even better spec than the Vulva. But the thing that really put me off the V70 was a very small oil leak from the engine, I'd done my homework and discovered that a seal tends to go that causes this leak, costs a couple of pounds, but to change it you've got to take the gearbox out, and they recommend that you change the clutch at the same time, so the bill would have been the best part of a grand!!! When I pointed out the leak to the seller (a private dealer) he said "Well it is a 90000 mile car, what do you expect?" At that point Volvos were no longer an option....

Oooh, well that's OK then

Frigging numpties. I've had this before, I went to see a Y reg 406 LX, covered in dings and scratches it was, the dealer said ....''its done 90000 miles what do you expect''. Then after the road test I detected the unmistakable smell of antifreeze and steam rising from the radiator.......''that's just water where we've cleaned the car earlier''.......twat.

Your right though Dai, allways pays to do a bit of research. That's why I ended up with the 406 beacause it was cheaper that an A4 or Passat, was more modern looking, and had a decent reliability history and even when they go wrong it's not that expensive to fix really (unless it's a DM Flywheel and clutch :| )

that would be the rear main crankshaft seal, another very common problem, the seal costs £20 and i can do one working flat out in about 6 hours including the clutch, the seal goes because the postive crankcase ventilation breather box gets blocked up and raises the crankcase pressure forcing the oil out of the easiest way, and the reason no one changes the breather box is because its a pig to get at, and you may as well change the entire breather system, which amounts to arround £500

My car is now sat round the back of my house on the drive way and I imagine that this weekend I will be taking bits off it not sure what to do with the bits though....lol! I'm sure there are a few people on here that would like a quiality turbo with a ported manifold etc....! lol

No still undecided as to what I'm going to do with it !
