Re: rear tyre no longer legal
You don't necessarily need anything replaced, but certainly your rear alignment is out and has caused abnormal tyre wear. 406's require 4 wheel alignment, and the alignment should be done at the Peugeot specified ride height. I would recommend you find yourself a place that has a Hunter DSP system, you can locate your nearest centre at http://www.alignmycar.co.uk. I would maybe advise that you check the condition of the horizontal link bars, lower and leading arm bushes first. If any of these are worn, get them replaced prior to alignment.

My local Kwik Fit has a full-on laser alignment system which works well on 406s. Just make sure you ask for a before&after print-out and make sure all values are good before parting with your money.

Re: rear tyre no longer legal
Glad to hear your's is OK.
Mine has suffered some form of uneven wear / broken cords etc on every tyre that's been on that corner, (though they've all done a stint on the front first). I suspect I made it worse when I swapped the top link about this time last year, despite marking it & being careful).

Re: rear tyre no longer legal
I have wondered when changing toplinks if there is a few mm difference in length between the old one removed and the new ones installed, then even if they are carefully marked the rear tracking is out.
I changed mine recently and marked them up with tippex and was careful. However, when I had the 4 wheel laser tracking done they were miles out.
Perhaps when changing toplinks it's always advisable to get the tracking done !!

Re: rear tyre no longer legal
Hi dummysock, was it easy to change the top link. I had a knocking on the back end on nearside and changed the drop link which got rid of a lot of the knocking. Now I can still hear a knock especially when I go over a bump and turning a corner at same time. Usualy on the mini roundabouts and turning right and the weight is on the near side.
Looking at that top cross link it looks as if the rubber is damaged on the end furthest away from the wheel. I am assuming this is part of the track control link and this is the end with the bolt that needs to be marked before removing it.
Thanks for any info and sorry for using this post for my own ends.

The inner bolt is a pig's dick to undo
Simply buy a new bolt from the stealer and angle grind the old one off
Had it first hand from a pug mechanic who worked at local dealer that is how they do it

Cheers plod. I might just take it to the garage. The mechanic is good and they dont charge the earth. At least that way I have some comeback if the tracking is out. Thanks again.

Re: rear tyre no longer legal
Be aware that whilst changing rear top links is a fairly easy job, 2 nuts and bolts each side. There are not many garages about with the equipment to track and adjust all 4 wheels.
Clearly rear wheels that are out of track can take several thousand miles before showing signs of irregular wear.
I have used a garage that uses "John Bean Visualiner 3D laser alignment system" to track my wheels after fitting track rod end and top links. alignments costs approx £79

Re: rear tyre no longer legal
Worse bit for me, was I too suffered from excessive tyre wear as wasn't clued up on the issue when first doing mine, and had to have another tyre, yet my mate has one of those magnetic tracking devices that attatch to your brake disc and digitally measure camber etc
