Edit: The K series engines are a disaster and blow head gaskets left, right and centre. The early diesel is mean to be a pile of poo too, the TD4 is a BMW engine though. Not that it means much to me.

There were two reasons I wanted a petrol - the first was the time my HDi takes to warm up and second was all the mamby-pamby emissions stuff on modern diesels that screw up if you do lots of tiny journeys. Seems like a Fleelander TD4 has the first one of these covered because they have a Webasto heater on them but I'm just not sure about the other. I've joined yet another forum (another day, another car, another forum and another smegging captcha to squint at :frown: ) but I really don't like just asking questions and then running off when it all goes tits-up again.

Exhibit a: http://www.njuskalo.hr/auti/land-rover- ... as-3970335 (it's a TD4 you monkey, can't you read?) which seems to be turning into a bumper car or something.
Exhibit b: http://www.njuskalo.hr/auti/land-rover- ... as-3874161 with less miles and definitely seems to have a Webasto (Sistem za pokretanje motora kod nižih temperatura - system for starting engine "at the house of" low temperatures). Btw I know the list of stuff it has looks impressive it's just a base model special (child locks ffs  ) and doesn't appear to have air con. For that money? :frown:

A friend had a diesel free lander, they are still just as unreliable the diff and gearbox failed, then a raft of other irritating electrical problems.
The k series is a problematic engine, but ARonline does seem to have quite a good section about replacement and improved head gaskets, though its just not a tough engine.

Oh yes, the rest of the car can be a disaster, I was reading on.. hold on... here: http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f9/freela ... 54179.html

Useful: http://www.myfreelander.co.uk/

But the TD4 engine is meant to be the best of the (bad) bunch. Apart from when it swallows the swirl flap screws, destroys the turbo, runs on its sump oil and detonates of course.

2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Insidenterally, I searched in Njuskalo for the most expensive Freelander because I spotted that one earlier and I thought it would come out at the top of the list. However, I was wrong. By miles http://www.njuskalo.hr/auti/land-rover- ... as-3812780

Iwas looking into the 4x4 thing for a while, but lost interest didnt know which one to get
a few of my mates have 4x4s theyre all standing by Toyota Landcruisers with the d4d lumps & the Rav4s the Rav4s are getting popular atm theyre pimping them up big wheels and bullbars ,

if igot one ithink it be a choice between Dihatsu and toyota,

Bejesus, you really need to be handy with the spanners to own a Freelander, going by that Poll thread there

It's enough to make any prospective owner run away screaming  If you take it at face value the TD4 is a much more of a disaster than the old Di but I'm fairly sure that's not the case, so perhaps there are 10 times as many TD4s on the forum as Dis :? And how many cars does it represent? If it's 319 then it would be mad to buy one, if it's 2000 then perhaps it's not all bad. Also, imagine if we did one of them on here - I'd have ticked about half of the boxes between my two 406s yet I consider all my problems to have been fairly minor considering. And remember there are lots of 406 owners who never end up on here because they never have any problems at all.

I must admit though, a cracked chassis doesn't sound like fun :o

If the freelander has become an option then is the nissan x trail still too big? It would definatley be more reliable than the landie.

The X-Trail is not an option. I drove my dad's TD4 auto Freelander when I was back in the UK in 2006 and my wife liked it, I thought it was as futless as guck but I didn't mind driving it at all.

Indeed.

I'd say those Landies are probably as bad as the forum suggests :|

I saw one comment where this had been 'fixed' with an inner-tube  (so it couldn't be heard creaking like an old boat).

Is that a vote for "run away screaming like a girl waiving your arms in the air"?

I didn't find any pics yet, I found one where a bolt had been left out on assembly and the rear subframe had twisted & cracked but I don't think that's the actual cracked chassis they talk about, just another day in the life of your typical Freelander  Did you see the post by the guy whose steering wheel came off in his hands yet?

You're meant to call them Avtogaz now, but everyone knows what they really are.
