ARRGGHhhh...Dead Pug

So there I was shooting merrily up the M5 and half way around the M4/M5 interchange, on the outside lane, peeling off towards Bristol, and all the gauges and the engine dies. I then had cross four lanes of M/Way and coast to a halt almost on the M4. After cleaning out my underpants I called a get you home service. So the problem:- all the electrics work except the dashboard dials and warning lights, the engine turns over merrily but won't start, and it's not the cambelt, which is fine. Please, has anyone any ideas?

shame you not nearer as i have 2 liter iam scraping and we could rob some bits to find out the fault.
i would whip out a plug and see if its sparking,and if its wet
might be ecu,alarm,or something unpluged/fallen out.

i've used easystart in the past to see if the car is sparking just took the air filter out and gave it a couple of squirts turned it over f it starts and dies its the fuels not getting through.This could be down to immobiliser or electronic fuel pump or relevent fuses and relays.

i know this is common pratice but its not a good idea to use easy start.

I've just had something similar on my v6, the hydraulic clutch set up I am using for my c2, when the slave cylinder went a tiny circular plastic piece got into the bell housing, been whipped up by fly wheel and over 2 weeks has taken a chunk out of the crank sensor, when this went simultaneously one of my fuel relays went and when swapped the faulty unit caused no fuel pump or constantly priming. Now got a new crank sensor on order it could be that. when you are cracking it over does it do a few turns on the starter and then stop despite the fact you still have the key to the starter motor position?

Nah, all the rest is immobiliser & battery faults. I haven't done any other forums yet, I'll wait to see how LostBloke's getting on with what we said already.

D8 ignition switches are know to give problems but it's usually heaters that die first. I don+t think D8s have any main fuses and I don't think there's one fuse that does both th engine ecu and dash.

Thanks for all the replies, it's good to know there's plenty of brains out there.

All the fuses seem O.K. I've checked the battery and engine connections, all seems to be well. I cannot get the link between the non firing engine and the lack of dash instrumentation and warning lights (except the battery warning light, which works).

On another subject. Some time back I posted about my Pug going into 'get-you-home' mode when cold. It turns out that this is a warning from the CPU that the gearbox oil needs changing, and the counter in the computer should be reset. (I'd had the oil changed but the gearbox 'specialist' that I use didn't have the equipment/knowledge to reset it).

Really does sound like an electrical issue. Maybe a bad earth somewhere?

I played about and found that fuse 2 was blown and kept blowing as soon as replaced. Looking serious I gave in and took it to my local garage. they 'phoned to tell me that the speedo sensor on the gearbox had shorted out. So with worries about expensive computer replacements it turns out we were nearly killed by a bloody sensor!
